Save a Life

Jun 10, 2006 22:02

Earlier this year, Jonny Angelone (Brighton High School - Class of '05), a very close friend of mine, was diagnosed with Stage 4 Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Chemotherapy, which worked well at first, has since lost effect. Doctors are gonig to try to harvest Jonny's own stem-cells, increase the chemo, and then use his stem-cells to replenish his system with his own bone-marrow. However, if this doesn't work, a  bone-marrow transplant (BMT) may be necessary.  If this is the case, it is best to find a bone-marrow match as soon as possible. A "Gift of Life Registry Drive" is being held to find matches for cancer victims, like Jonny. This process is simple (just a finger-prick and a cheek swab) and even if you are not a match for Jonny, you can be added to a national registry of prospective bone-marrow donors, and even save a life. The requirements for donors are simple; anyone between the ages of 18 and 60, with no previous or current health problems, can donate. The drive is going to be held on Saturday, June 17th, from 9:00 AM until 1:00 PM at the First Bible Baptist Church at 1039 North Greece Road. Please spread the word and ask everyone you know to get tested. Thank you.
