Summertime in Spain. It's high season and it's hot. Time for white linen shirts and sandals. I got a summer haircut and the cooler night breezes feel good against my bare neck. A show in Madrid on Friday, another the next day in my beloved Barcelona, and I'll spend my birthday playing in Benicassim ( Read more... )

This stirred in me my painful yet epic memories of failing in New York, but also my latent intention of taking time one of these years to live, write and record in Japan.

I think everyone should fail in New York at least once. Though I say that because I failed during my first stint in New York. I couldn't get a gig to save my life, it was so fucking depressing. Even more so when I had to slink back to Montreal with my tail between my legs.

I can see you living in Japan. Totally. I would love to hear the record that would come out of that experience. It would be insane. Go, Beck! Go now!

I went when I was 17 and I mostly played on the streets and gig-crashed. When I slunk back to L.A. I felt like my tail had been cut off. It was fantastic in that way that New York trauma is fantastic.

I have to do some touring for a while for the one that's coming out soon. I'm tempted to do it next after all that, but then there's the whole complication of having a kid and being divorced.

We so look like brothers in this icon pair.

Well, you played your part in being an excellent listener. Like I said before, you have an astonishing way of drawing people out. It's almost unnerving.

Thank you for being the perfect host. I'm not always the perfect guest, but I try ;)

It's funny, New York has been known to stage one too many disasters for me and simultaneously, it's always been some strange source of inspiration. But I know what you mean, sometimes you have to reinvent yourself in a new setting to make it work, or at least hope it works. Dynamite was written and recorded in Spain, Italy, Costa Rica, Scotland, New York, Los Angeles and my house in Buckinghamshire. It gave me an excuse to keep moving when I couldn't stand the thought of sticking around in one place.

I am such an insanely huge fan, you have no idea. I've added you if that's alright. I'm fully addicted to every one of your albums.
