Why food prices are going up: The role of the WTO

May 11, 2008 19:51

One of the things missing from many mainstream analyses of the food crisis is the role played by "structural adjustment" in frakking local farmers particularly in the poorest developing countries where the food shortages are currently the worst.

Thanks to unusualmusic's eagle eyes, there's this excellent article by Craig Mckintosh on the "Free Trade" and the destruction of indigenous agriculture in many countries (reposted on Daily Kos from Celsias).

What should we do? The best thing to do is to completely scrap these so-called Free Trade deals so that local production is re-animated. The surpluses being generated by US agriculture can be funnelled back into the US market to drive prices back down. The only loser in this scenario would be (can you guess?) .... Yes! Big Farming.

Should I shed a tear? I don't think so.
