[OOC] Do I ping you?

Nov 25, 2007 15:19

Miyamoto is very good at not overusing exposition. The problem with that is I don't have a lot of hard canon to go on as to what Fiore is, what her powers entail, and so on. But camp is full of people who might be pinged by her, so here, have an essay!

- Fiore is dead. This is not obvious unless you're attuned to that sort of thing: as far as I can tell, she still breathes, she still eats, her body is at least within normal human ranges of temperature, her skin doesn't feel clammy, there are no fatal wounds or signs of fatal illness on her, etc. But she did actually die in canon.

- On that note, she's chronologically 25-26, physically 15-16, has been reanimated for 10 years, and has been active under her own power for 4 years. Her hair still grows, judging from a flashback scene, but she doesn't physically age. She died at 15-16.

- She was originally at least half-demon. I'm not sure what the original Japanese said, but according to the English manga, her father was a rogue demon like the Sinners, and it's specifically her mother who owned summoning jewels and trained her and Satella. So her mother might have been a demon, or she might've been an empowered human: both are possible, and I'd rather not decide without a Satella in camp. (If she was a full demon, though, she was never "inducted" the way most demons are -- she never grew horns and never got linked to Pandaemonium, and nobody worries about Pandaemonium affecting her.) Chrno Crusade demons aren't exactly "normal" demons, but for camp purposes, we're handwaving that, so!

- She's been reanimated by demonic magic/technology. I'd rather not pin down the details without a Shader in camp, but as far as I can tell, she's had drastic infusions of Legion (the demonic equivalent of cells) that let her do things like stick her limbs back on. Legion usually needs a power source, and I don't know what Fiore's is. The anime seems to suggest that it has something to do with her collar, but there's a reason I'm not going with the manga. [laughs] I suspect she ran on an artificial power source for the first six years, and then under her own power, but I'm really not sure. So handwave the details for now and say she runs on demonic magic?

- Fiore claims that she's a soul created to inhabit and reanimate the corpse, but I don't think this is accurate. Not only does she seem to have Florette's memories, and only personality changes that are justified by being dead for ten years, she reclaims the name of "Florette" in the epilogue and thinks of Satella as "sister". So, yes, the soul in her body is the one that's supposed to be there (if not for the whole death thing); she is Florette Harvenheit, but she really doesn't think of herself that way at the point I'm taking her from. Right now she's Fiore.

- (edited) She really just qualifies as "undead"; she's neither a zombie nor a vampire, despite my icons. It's just fun to call her that. :D

- She's a jewel summoner. Her earring and presumably at least one other jewel are on her person at all times: they may not be innately magical, but she uses them for magic, so they might have some "residue" if nothing else. Satella spends a day trekking through the sewers to find a single jewel that she lost, despite having enough money to just buy a replacement if they're totally interchangeable, but her jewels have sentimental value and might need some kind of preparation before they're useable (so it'd be a waste to let it go).

(edited) Joshua clarified something I misread! I don't know how most of her jewels work, but it's possible for her to turn people into jewels, which are then used as power sources by the Sinners. I don't think there's a reason for her to have any of that sort of jewel on her in camp, and I imagine it's more complicated than "poof, you're a jewel", so she's not going to be randomly jeweling people who annoy her or anything. (And while her expression is mostly blank when she looks at the people she's going to jewel, it's Fiore's version of a ". . . damn it" face. So.)

- The power is innate to her: it can't be learned by other people, and Aion had her reanimated specifically because the power was still in her body even after she died. (So if you bodyswitch with Fiore, you'll be a corpse, but you can probably do jewel magic if you can figure out how.)

- Jewel summoning does basically whatever the mangaka needs it to. Satella summons magical beasts to transport her and attack people; Fiore's signature weapon is the magical scythe and gauntlet in her icons; they both can summon giant jewel mecha; Satella manages to encode video and audio into a jewel to leave a message for people; Fiore is seen working some kind of magic involving a bunch of jewels scattered on the floor (possibly a cloaking/protective spell?); Satella cryogenically freezes herself and Fiore; and Fiore was originally taken because she can, apparently, trap people in jewels so that the Sinners can use the jewels as a power source. Yeaaah.

Summoning is done in German, which is Fiore's first language. "Laden!" or "Erscheinen!" acts as a trigger word, followed occasionally by the name of the thing being summoned or spell being cast. (Fiore calls her scythe with "Laden!", but all the jewel mecha and beasts are "Erscheinen! !". The cryo-spell uses "Befreien".) The German names are not actually good German, and don't quite match up with the Japanese "translations" Miyamoto chose; the translations are all Description + Month. (Except for Ritters Juwel, which might just be another name for Mutigster / Mighty May, but.)

In short: I have no idea how much or how little this is going to come up, but if you're pinged by magic Fiore will ping you, and canon handwavium + camp crack = jewel magic is really flexible.

. . . I think that's everything. Short form: if you're pinged by death, demons, and/or magic, Fiore qualifies. She doesn't seem to have any sort of sixth sense in canon, though, so Fiore will not necessarily be pinged by you.
