A glimpse into one of Rainbow's Early Movies, Junior's Groove

Jul 17, 2006 22:31

I recently purchased and watched Junior's Groove. I myself really like it. It's about a teenage piano prodigy named Junior. This movie revolves around him, his mother and his friends. His best friend is named Buddy, that's who Rainbow plays. Under the cut is my review of this movie. This review contains spoilers so read at your own risk.

Intro to the characters:

Junior is a very bright young man, but kinda shy because he's obese, and doesn't have very many people to trust except his mother and his friend Buddy. His mother is a diabetic and is prone to diabetic attacks, so Junior has to take care of his mother as much as she takes care of him. Buddy is a homeless kid, but he's protective and a very good friend to Junior. However, he tends to run with a dangerous crowd, and it starts to have an effect on him later in the movie, and brings out a traumatic part of his past. Butter(?) is a girl who Buddy tries to get with, she's about in the same situation as he is, but Buddy is taken with her nonetheless. Then there is Mr. Poole, the school janitor who provides Buddy and Junior with a secret hangout spot in the basement, where the two boys had constructed a complete solar system model hanging on the ceiling.

About the movie:

As you know by now, Junior is VERY good at the piano. But the problem is, he has no real means to practice his skill. He has a music tutor, but since she won't let him use his piano (for a mysterious reason) he taps out the 'notes' on the table. There is a certain piano he has his eyes on in a music store, but the owner will not let anyone but his daughter play it. Junior meets this young lady while she's playing in the store one day and falls for her instantly, which is so adorable. So Junior's goal throughout the movie is to finally be able to hone his skills as a musician. His drive and his persistance is heartwarming and inspiring.

Then there is Buddy and Butter. They are trying to survive on the streets, but their other street friends are a bit hard to trust lately. Then Buddy meets Butter, and he knows he has to be with her. He spends quite a bit of time trying to get to know her and to steal her heart, despite Butter's attempts to play hard to get. This continuous, playful wooing between the two of them is just too cute, and I couldn't help smiling at the two of them together. Meanwhile, there is a crooked street person nicknamed Ducky, who uses his knowledge of the ghetto to run his own evil street gang who hurt other people if they get in his way. he tries to get Buddy involved, and in parts of the movie you wonder if he just might end up being succumbed to the dark side.

I highly recommend the movie. The cast of main characters all have mysterious and endearing quirks to them. Buddy and Junior's drive to make things better in their lives shows they are courageous as well. The plot isn't at all boring, and will keep you watching until the bittersweet ending.

I have also scanned the front and back covers of the dvd case for you all. They came out a bit large when I scanned them, so you are warned.

When I get a chance, I will do a detailed review of Love Come Down, which is also a really good Rainbow movie.
