Retrospective...
1999 - 90% of the things I do are redundant and should be automated.
2002 - now only 40% can be automated and when I reach the level of 3-5% it is time to change profession. most of this 40% consist of trying to make the tools I use do what they do either very badly or can't do it altogether.
2005 - one of the largest slowing factors is the legacy that is either included for backwards compatibility or not thrown out because it does the job (this affects most, if not all areas I work with, especially software). IMHO from time to time one has to reassess the problem, throw out the legacy with all the workarounds and inadequacies and redesign! due change is good, and it should not be delayed.
