Day Five Script- What Should Have Been
Title: Day Five
Spoilers: Day Five of CoE (duh) and probably all of the ones before that as well
Rating: PG
Summary: What RTD should have written for his last episode.
Disclaimer: I will never admit these characters are RTD’s (he doesn’t deserve them) but they are the BBC’s unfortunately.
Note: I hope this isn’t confusing or anything to the read but if you watch it with day five it makes more sense.
Plus I’ll be posting this to RTD soon if people think it’s any good? Concrit would be great!
Any sections that go un-mentioned or are described in brief with time frames present are the same as the original filming of Torchwood Day Five shown on the BBC. (they will have ‘original filming’ printed before time frames)
Changes from 43 minutes and 31 seconds of Torchwood Day Five to 43 minutes 39 seconds-
Camera focuses on Jack’s face as he’s obviously trying to decide.
Jack: mutters The pain of one is the pain of many.
Johnson: voice raised in anger as we hear Decker snigger You can’t be serious?!
Jack: There’s another way... I’m sure there is I just...
Camera shows Alice who is currently stood relieved. She moves forward hugging Jack.
Alice: Thank you dad, thank you.
Jack: Go to Steven.
Alice hesitates and Jack doesn’t look at her as she leaves. He moved forward resting against the console.
Jack: muttering think, think… aloud Got it!
Jack runs to different consoles pressing different keys in an obvious order. Decker notices and we see him concentrate for a moment before realisation dawns.
Decker: No it won’t work. Only way is for the kid to fry.
Johnson: Captain what are you doing?!
Jack grabs her by the shoulders his face strong and determined as he speaks.
Jack: I’m going to save the world.
Jack runs around still speaking.
Jack: Clem is the key. He was still connected to them and all the kids too. And me. I was there I absorbed some of the same radiation that affected Clem. Just not half as much. Hopefully if I can use that link and just make it stronger…
Johnson: interrupting Captain you’ll die.
Decker: laughing slightly fry just like the kid would.
Jack turns to Johnson and Decker standing in the centre of the machine light radiating from below him.
Jack: I can survive anything.
Jack begins to fit an alarm sounding.
Johnson: To Decker what’s going on?
Decker: The machine it’s trying to expel him. Sniggers. He isn’t compatible. The links not strong enough.
(Original footage- Switches to the kids hiding David seeing the soldiers. 43 minutes 39 seconds till 44 minutes 25 seconds.)
Haunting music is played and over shadows all other sounds including vocals. Scene switches from Jack stood in the centre of the machine seemingly fitting and scenes simultaneously taking place with the children being chased. Alice appears at the locked door banging on it with Steven next to her.
Alice: Screaming Dad… Stop, dad!
The change of scenes suddenly stop at Jack. The alarm stops and his body goes into a trance like state. Decker steps back shaking his head.
Johnson: it’s working… isn’t it? Smiles
Jack’s jaw drops and an ear piercing sound emits. Alice looks on distraught and both Johnson and Deck step back slightly. (Original footage- 46 minutes 25 seconds till 46 minutes 50 seconds shows children everywhere joining in all the same noise including Mica with Gwen before showing the 456 on floor 13 obviously not liking the noise.)
Jack’s body starts to convulse and shake blood coming from both his nose and ears. Alice continues to scream for him as both Johnson and Decker have to look away.

Footage continues to switch between the 456 dying, Jack stood convulsing in the centre of the room and the children in the same trance state as Jack.

Jack’s body suddenly drops and is laid limp in the centre of the floor. Johnson moves and presses a release to allow Alice into the room. She runs to her dad leaving Steven by the door.
Alice: Come on dad wake up… dad please… please…
Alice rocks back and forth clinging Jack’s body his head resting in her lap.
Agent over Johnson’s radio: There’s something happening here. Johnson the bodies. The bodies in the bags are moving!
Suddenly Jack gasps back to life.
(Original footage- 49 minutes 52 seconds till 52 minutes 12 seconds Prime Minister’s office scene)
Jack sits in a small hallway his foot tapping impatiently. A man comes out and ushers him in.
Johnson: Well I’m told you’re the expert. Explain this.
The hall previously holding the dead from Thames house now holds the same amount of alive people. They’re all sat or stood or lying down confused to what is happening. Jack walks in his eyes widening.
Johnson: So?
Jack: The 456. Last time they were here they gave us the antidote to the exact same virus. But there was no antidote. The only reason people recovered was because they left. They were the virus, as long as they were present on earth…
Jack cuts off as he sees Ianto amongst the crowd. Ianto is helping people reassuring them.
Ianto: I’m sure you’re daughters fine. This will all be explained please just calm down.
Ianto looks up and meets Jack’s eyes. He straightens up adjusting his waist coat and standing very formally. Jack strides over grabbing Ianto and kissing him forcefully.
* * * *
Gwen is sat in Rhiannon’s kitchen Rhys holding her hand across the table as she thumbs at her mobile waiting for a call. It rings.
Gwen: Jack what in the hell just happened?... yes... Oh God... He’s, so you mean... Yes I understand Jack. Bye.
Gwen puts her head in her hands laughing slightly but building up.
Rhys: God you gone insane or something?
Gwen: Crying slightly Shut up you bloody idiot! Ianto he’s alive he’s bloody alive!
Gwen leans over and kisses Rhys as Rhiannon enters.
Gwen: I think I’ve got some bloomin’ amazing news for you.
6 months later
Jack is stood with his hand on Ianto’s shoulder the other on Gwen’s. Next to Gwen is Rhys his arm around her waist. Gwen is heavily pregnant. They’re stood by the site where the hub used to be. It’s now paved over and the public would think very little had ever happened here. There is obvious construction work still taking place and Ianto kicks a small piece of dirt across into the construction site. Lois walks up behind them all smiling and carrying a tray of starbucks coffee.
Lois: Here we are coffee.
Ianto takes his plastic cup and breaths it in a smile tugging at his lips. Lois stands by Ianto listening to an on going conversation.
Gwen: what now then?
Jack’s face is serious and expression sad.
Jack: I don’t know. But whatever we do. We do it together.
His hand gives Ianto’s shoulder a soft squeeze as he turns to Gwen. The camera continually zooms out as all three men are laughing and talking with Jack crouched down in front of Gwen’s stomach and Rhys’s hand on top of it. Ianto is stood behind Jack laughing at the two men’s obsession with her pregnancy. Lois is watching them all smiling and Gwen beckons her over and moves her hand onto the ‘baby bump’. It stops at an aerial view of Cardiff and credits role.
