I've overheard a lot of people donating to help out Hurricane Katrina's victims. I just wanted to let everyone know a few things before they choose which charity to utilitze:
Red Cross
Specifically states on their website that they will not take blood from gay men (or any man that has had sex with another man). In their words:
You should not give blood if you have AIDS or have ever had a positive HIV test, or if you have done something that puts you at risk for becoming infected with HIV.
You are at risk for getting infected if you are a male who has had sexual contact with another male, even once, since 1977.
Apparently, straight people don't get HIV/AIDS. Hmmm, I didn't know that. Either that or gay men aren't human. Maybe our blood will make people gay. Then the whole world would be queer.
United Way
Supports the boy scouts - and we know how anti-gay they all are (even though they seem like the gayest organization in the world - and I'm sure half their attendees are). The boy scouts policy is that gay members are not allowed. As they say on their website:
The [Boy Scouts of America] reaffirmed its view that an avowed homosexual cannot serve as a role model for the traditional moral values espoused in the Scout Oath and Law and that these values cannot be subject to local option choices.
Nice, huh?
INSTEAD -
I recommend donating through the
Rainbow World Fund - who supports everyone and isn't prejudice. Just seems like the right thing to do. I made a donation to them last week.
I just wanted people to know the morals of each receiving organization prior a the donation.
