I've been watching the LP Covers meme come and go on Facebook, and though I was sometimes tempted to join in, I didn't, for a couple of reasons. One is that it asked you to post the cover of an LP that had stayed on your playlist down through the years with no context. Well where's the fun in that? Fuck you, Facebook.
Another was the problem in choosing. As soon as I went collecting covers, I downloaded the first single I ever bought with my own money. But this wasn't about singles. And then I downloaded the first album (bought with the same postal order, while in holiday in Scaborough). And although it is a might album, and brought 13 year old me a world of pleasure, I haven't played it in, oh, 30 years.
And in those days I didn't buy albums. I hardly bought singles, between the ages of 13 and 17. Which was 1977 to 1981. I taped songs of the radio, sure, but the songs that moved me most, and that I still listen to today, I didn't own then. So should I miss out The Pistols, The Undertones, The Damned, Crass, Dead Kennedies, Stiff Little Fingers, The Exploited, Angelic Upstarts, The Slits, The Jam, because I didn't buy the albums?
Nah...
So the next few posts are going to be full of music that meant something to me when I heard them, and some of them are with me still, and some of them left me after a year or ten.
In the words of the Prophets... Hey, Ho, Let's Go....
