Broome investigators say 19 year old Matt Wakefield of West Windsor was either walking along Route 17 West, or trying to cross it, when he was struck a little after midnight.
His fiancee, Debra Singer, believes Wakefield was walking all the way from West Windsor to her home in Hallstead.
He sent her this text message, "I'm OMW", which Singer says means "on my way."
She received a second text messege saying his 15 mile midnight walk would prove his love for her.
Singer says she tried to call Wakefield's cell phone and offer him a ride but didn't get an answer.
A sheriff's deputy discovered his body along the road.
"There were no vehicles located at the scene, nor has anybody reported striking anybody on the highway up there. There was some debris up there in evidence," said detective Mike Fedish.
Pieces of a grey fender.
Detectives found a grey fender they believe came off a large vehicle like an SUV, truck, or a semi.
"The big factor right now is we don't have a vehicle so we don't know what to compare it to," said Fedish.
The Broome County Sheriff's Office is treating this case as a hit-and-run.
Debra Singer says Wakefield had been known to play in traffic for the adrenaline rush.
He was grazed by another car as recently as Sunday night.
Singer insists he wouldn't have committed suicide, and doubts he was playing in traffic while coming to see her.
Anyone who may have any information about the hit and run is asked to call the Broome County Sheriff's Office at (607) 778-1196.

The Broome Sheriff's office is now certain a tractor trailer hit and killed 19 year old Mathew Wakefield.
Wakefield was found dead on Route 17 in Windsor just after midnight Tuesday.
Detectives believe he was walking next to, or crossing the highway, when he was hit.
They say pieces of gray trim and fender found at the scene indicate it was a 2003-2006 model Volvo tractor trailer that hit Wakefield.
The Broome Sheriff's office is asking anyone who may have more information to call (607) 778-1196.

WEST WINDSOR -- The Broome County Sheriff's Office continues to seek leads regarding a fatal hit-and-run accident that killed a Colesville teenager.
Matthew J. Wakefield, 19, of 616 North Road, was found dead early Tuesday morning along the left-hand shoulder of Route 17 west, a half-mile west of the West Windsor exit.
"We have no vehicle at this time. In fact, we have very little information, other than some debris recovered at the scene that was gray in color," Detective Lt. Michael Fedish of the Broome County Sheriff's Office said Tuesday.
Gray motor vehicle trim was found at the crash scene, he said.
Wakefield's body was discovered at 12:15 a.m. by a sheriff's office road patrol, Fedish said.
The motor vehicle/pedestrian accident may have occurred around midnight, investigators indicated.
Broome County Coroner Dr. James Hayes pronounced Wakefield dead at the crash scene.
The teen, who had just moved to the area from Charleston, W.Va., died of severe trauma, Fedish said.
"The injuries were such that they appear to have been caused by a larger-type vehicle, like a sport utility vehicle or some type truck," Fedish said.
Wakefield was wearing dark clothing, including a long three-quarter-length dark coat, Fedish said.
The area just west of Exit 77 itself wasn't well lit, investigators said.
Investigators believe Wakefield doesn't have any relatives locally. "To the best of our knowledge, he was seeking employment," Fedish said.
The sheriff's office said Tuesday that deputies were investigating the crash and interviewing people.
"So far, no witnesses have come forward," Fedish said.

WEST WINDSOR -- The Broome County Sheriff's Office is looking for information about a Volvo tractor trailer, identified as the vehicle that struck and killed a 19-year-old Town of Colesville resident early Tuesday on Route 17, detective Lt. Michael Fedish said.
Investigators earlier had been unable to provide specific information on the vehicle model that struck Matthew J. Wakefield of North Road, Town of Colesville.
"Items recovered at the scene indicate the vehicle that struck and killed Wakefield was a 2003- to 2006-year model Volvo tractor trailer of unknown color," Fedish said Wednesday.
A piece of gray trim recovered at the crash site in the Town of Windsor, just south of the Route 17 West Windsor exit, was identified as a "generic piece" that would be on any Volvo tractor trailer, Fedish said.
Wakefield, who was wearing dark clothing, was in the middle of Route 17's westbound driving lane while walking to Pennsylvania to visit his girlfriend, Fedish said. Investigators earlier thought Wakefield might have been walking along the shoulder of the road.
"He was definitely in the roadway," Fedish said.
An autopsy performed at Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton showed Wakefield died of massive trauma, Fedish said.
"The area where the accident occurred was not well lit. The driver could very well have been someone who might have thought Wakefield was an animal, like a deer," Fedish said.
Anyone with information may call the Sheriff's Office at 778-1911 or 778-1196.

Police
discover hit-and-run victim on highway
WINDSOR, N.Y. A sheriff's deputy on routine patrol discovered the body of a hit-and-run victim on a highway near Binghamton early today.
Authorities say 19-year-old Matthew Wakefield was pronounced dead at the scene on state route 17 in the town of Windsor, ten miles east of Binghamton.
Investigators say Wakefield had moved to the Binghamton area from Charleston, West Virginia, a few weeks ago. He was about four miles away from his home when he was struck.
Police say they believe Wakefield was hit by a large sport utility vehicle or a tractor-trailer. A piece of gray trim found near the scene may have come from the vehicle.
Wakefield was wearing a dark-colored jacket and jeans. Police say he apparently was struck around midnight.
Police are asking for help from the public as investigators work to find the driver of the vehicle that struck Wakefield.
