Re: The Job

This is an overdue update about how my new job is going.

To give you a general idea of the type of environment, my first day I dressed bussines casual even though the dress is casual.  Well everyone mentioned it to me many times, that I overdressed.  So now I wear shorts, t-shirts, sandals if I wanted to.  It is very nice.  Also on my first day tour a guy brought me upstairs to the developer floor (where the developers and our boss works) and opened a refrigerator that had all the shelves taken out and inside had a 5 gallon keg , compressed air tank and a tap.  Thats right, beer on tap.  It turns out there is a guy there really into brewing at home (I knew I would get along with him right away).  The refrigerator in the kitchen downstairs is full of water, pop, tea, and budlight and guiness.  There is also plenty of snacks, a really nice coffee maker, etc.  All this is provided for us, we dont have to contribute money in a pot or anything.

The work is pretty relaxed, I spend most of the time fixing bugs in the application, some could take 10 minutes, others a few days.  My boss is very hands off, Ive only talked to him in person about work once or twice (more times through IM/email).  Luckily everyone else is very helpfull.  My first week I sat in between two guys around my age that talked a ton, seems like my first two days they didnt get anything done.  One of the guys is the one that brews beer at home, so I had many questions for him and a few weeks ago I went to his place and brewed my first beer.  I was shocked as to how simple it was.  Unfortunately he has since left the company, but we will still hang out from time to time.  Unfortunately he also took the keg with him.  Another thing I noticed is other guys have chess tables set up between their cubicles and they go back and forth usually fishing a game or two daily in between work.  There is also a fuse ball table, but it doesnt get used much anymore because it became a noise problem for our neighbors.

Lately Ive been doing some very tedious, boring documentation.  Trying to understand some code someone wrote years ago whose primary language isnt english.  I often take breaks to browse the internet at random.  I also use wikipedia a ton now, anytime I wonder about anything (i wonder a lot), I just look it up.  The internet is an amazing source.

Overall, I love it.  Work stress is no longer an issue for me.

P.S. In case you are wondering I rarely have a drink at work, dont usually have the desire to.  I did drink the home made beer when it was there because it was pretty good, never more than 3 in a day.  Now I might think about a refreshing bud light on a friday afternoon, but getting a buzz at work isnt good because you just want to drink more.
