I am not ashamed to reveal that this was my *favorite* television commercial when I was a kid...

Naturally, it follows that this was -- ok...still is -- my absolute *favorite* television show from the same period (and yours, too...stop lying to yourself.)

"Change their miiiiiiiiiiind and change the woooooooooooooooooooooooooooorld!" Indeed...

So...last night's CNN Democratic debate. DAMN. Enormously entertaining. Incredibly sad. :( I've been discussing the debate and its attendant disappointments almost non-stop today, which should mean I have to lot to say about it in this space, but...I don't, which doesn't surprise me since the time has come again when I begin to wonder why I haven't shut this journal down. Hmmmmmmm... Anyway, almost as much fun as all the parsing and the drama is reading through some of the opinions and comments on last nights debate left by readers of CNN.com, MSNBC.com, FOXNews.com, etc. For example:

Tommy Joe -- I'm not a big Obama supporter, but the way he presents himself, I'm beginning to see a real Leader. Hillary still just comes off as a career politician wanting the next big prize. I don't trust her, I don't believe her, and I don't see any real leadership qualities from her. At this point , I'll probably cross the aisle and vote republican. Although, Obama does show promise and I have until November to really decide.

Byron B -- Obama showed us last night that he is not ready to be a leader. He started in on Clinton right off the bat about issues that do not matter to the average American. Of course Clinton is going to defend herself and point out inconsistencies in his tactics. Personally I don't see why it is so bad to have the Clintons back in the White House...the economy was good and Bill was a very good president. Yes he lied about a stupid mistake but so has every other president, just not about such an embarrassing issue (at least as far as we know).

Mel -- I SO can't wait to vote for Edwards! The candidate that is more worried with trying to help the American voters than trying to get involved into the drama that looks more and more like a high school catfight that a presidential race! I am so sick of this! We are in desperate need for a turn around in our policies and I for one am trying to make and effot to stop either one of them from doing this in the oval office!

Kathryn -- I will vote Republican if Hillary wins! She hurts the feminist movement by having hubby take up for her and do her dirty work. Before the recent political tactics by her and Bill I was willing to vote for any democratic candidate like I have for every presidential election in the past. However, there is no way I will vote for Hillary now. NO WAY!!!

Mary -- Obama is the biggest phoney I ever saw. When he shakes his finger in a poor imitation of JFK, I cringe. His whole career has been stage managed: he writes a book, is in the Senate for two years and thinks he can take on the toughest job in the world, all the while NOT CASTING A VOTE 130 TIMES! Talk about setting it all up for a campaign. This guy is a calculating phoney! The gall! And all that eloquence in his speeches is not even his. It belongs to his speech writer and I discovered he's reading it all from a teleprompter. Good God, America, I know we have believing, open hearts but this guy is a PHONEY!!! And by the way, the Clintons are more black than Obama.

Reid -- Hillary Clinton is a political animal who is willing to say or do anything to get elected president. She is the one who switched tactics after losing in Iowa. She started attacking Obama in truly "Rovian" fashion and she represents the polarizing politics of the past. I personally do not want to see a switch from the Bush Dynasty back to the Clinton Dynasty. She does not represnt any kind of true change. Obama has my vote!

And spitting against the wind, we have:

aichain -- There's an entire article here devoted to the dynamics of the debate - the bickering between these two and the drama resulting from it - and barely anything that talks about the actual policy positions of the candidates. Stop trying to turn this election into a reality TV show, CNN, and report on what actually matters.
