Bob Davis Interview

Jul 11, 2007 09:11

Gary Fong has an interview up with his friend, Bob Davis, who was lead photographer for the Eva Longoria and Tony Parker wedding in France last week.  It's sorta interesting...here are some highlights:

GARY FONG: what else was done to protect the files?
BOB DAVIS: It started with the process of shooting with the Canon EOS 1D pro series bodies. Mark IIn and Mark III. They allow us to shoot raw to the CF card and large jpg to sd card simultaneously which gives us an immediate back up in camera.
BOB DAVIS: When the CF cards were full, we downloaded them simultaneously to 2 lacie 160gb triple interface rugged drives using firewire 800 for ulitmate speed.
BOB DAVIS: These drives were then backed up to DVD.

GARY FONG: how many images did you shoot?
BOB DAVIS: Thousands, haven't counted yet.
BOB DAVIS: 152 gigs worth
BOB DAVIS: We shot for 6 days.

GARY FONG: How was she to photograph?
GARY FONG: Did she want a lot of posed images,
GARY FONG: or just for you to stay back?
BOB DAVIS: No, she made it very clear she wanted a photojournalistic approach which appeals to my background.

GARY FONG: everybody wants to know - what was in your gear bag?
BOB DAVIS: Two Canon EOS 1D Mark II n and one 5D. Three 580ex strobes, and I used every lens for different situations. 16-35, 24-70, 70-200, all f2.8 and a 24 f1.4 and an 85 f1.2 for available light. 2 Whailtail reporters and 1 Whaitail studio for light modifiers (thank you Gary). And plenty of 2 and 4 gig CF cards. George had the same except he shot with 2 Mark III cameras.
BOB DAVIS: We had triple backup gear. Two laptops, plenty of extra batteries, surge protecters, card readers, etc.
BOB DAVIS: For portraits we used Quantam strobes with Q Nexus modules to connect wirelessly with my Canon strobes.

======================================

Anyway, I think I'll pick up OK to see these images.  Davis' partner, George, shot with the new Canon 1D Mark III, which I'm probably getting in September/October.  I don't think the camera makes the photographer, of course, but it'll be cool to see some high-profile photos from this new body.  I'm also considering a switch from the Lightsphere to the Whailtail.
