New science officer....

An interesting thing happened yesterday.

Our science officer, the esteemed Lieutenant-Commander Sonya Naff, came down with Bellas flu--an extremely contagious disease only treatable with immediate action. She had to be rushed to Starfleet Medical for treatment, and will be out of commission for months, possibly years; but, unfortunately, with the officer shortage and the end of the war, we have no one qualified to take her place.

Fortunately, we were due to recieve a handful of scientists from the Vinland anyhow; most notably, Lieutenant beriani_edenost, a qualified officer and a formidable scientist--and a Trill; this last qualification being a fact which I only discovered after she had boarded the station. She's been promoted to science officer, effective immediately.

I don't know why this seems important to me.

It surprised me, I guess. Waiting for the airlock to open, expecting to see Bolians and humans and Vulcans, and seeing one of my own kind instead....

It's not like there aren't Trills in Starfleet. Me, for instance. I knew one or two at the Academy. But my people are still so closed to the outside world; and most young Trills have been so brainwashed by the constant propaganda from the Symbiosis Institute, that any other career besides working their collective tails off for the rest of their lives to qualify for Joining seems absurd and completely outside the realm of possibility.

Did I mention that this really, really bothers me?

But back to the topic at hand. Beriani was apparently raised on Earth, which would be why she's in Starfleet instead of parroting the Institute's pretentious BS teachings. She seems more human than Trill at times.

Still, having another Trill around who won't either condemn me for the strange circumstances of my Joining or worship the ground I walk upon will be nice.

I've invited her to dinner--I hope I can get to know her better.
