On Mon (10/10), in the wee hours of the morning, I woke up and saw Ezra sleeping on the floor. So I tried to carry him up to my bed. So sleepy, not thinking! Mistake #1: I bent my back to carry him. But he was 13 kg. When I carried him, I lost my balance, and fell backwards, half my butt hitting the floor, the other half landed on the base of the standing fan. My back felt so painful I crawled back to the bed and left him still on the floor. Had to wake him to come up to the bed himself. Then fell asleep again in pain.
Woke up, told dh, got scolded by him. We went to see a famous Chinese sinseh in Clementi. He suggested we get an x-ray done. Also did acupuncture. My back felt a little better after that. But almost immediately after we came out of the consultation room, I felt faint. Mistake #2: I didn't have breakfast before the acupuncture. So I slumped on a chair with my head spinning, while dh went to get a loaf of bread. Felt better after some time, so we went home to sleep.
Saw a GP in the afternoon to get MC. After listening to my story, he sent us to do x-ray. Got it done at a polyclinic. Results would be sent to the GP. Meanwhile, I had to change the way I walked cos it was quite painful. I had to try different positions to minimise the pain.
Got a call from the GP on Wed. He said,'You got a fracture. Quite unexpected... For this kind of case, I usually recommend getting a second opinion from a specialist. But most likely nothing will be done. They will just ask you to eat more calcium..... You can come and see me later.' It got me thinking all kinds of questions and imagining. One of it was 'Will I be able to have another baby?'
When we saw him later, he explained further, and the problem didn't sound as scary as i thought. He even has a book with many detailed charts of different parts of the body to show us where the fracture was (the x-ray's not very clear).
We went to the polyclinic last Mon (17/10). Waiting time: close to 2h. Got the referral to see a specialist at NUH on Wed. The specialist checked my reflexes for both legs, ok. Looked at my x-ray. When my dh asked him if he considers the fracture to be small or big, he said small. He even detected another possible crack at my back, probably congenital, which might be the reason why I've been back pain since my teenage years. Not very serious, sent me home with 1 month's mc, and a follow-up appointment 2 months later to do a repeat x-ray, which he said prob wouldn't show much improvement.
Lessons learnt:
1) Don't carry anything heavy by bending your back.
2) Don't consult Chinese physician without breakfast.
3) Go to polyclinic before doing x-ray and going to see specialist. Cost of taking x-ray when referred by GP: $50.20. Cost when referred by polyclinic dr: $18. Cost of seeing specialist when referred by GP: $50-80. Cost when referred by polyclinic dr: $21. And I didn't pay a cent at the specialist clinic. Looks like I went in there free, but no lah, they'll deduct it from my salary.
I'm feeling better now than last week. Hopefully the specialist is right to say that the pain will go away in 1 month's time.
