Brooklyn

I now live in Brooklyn.  It has been a weird couple of days.  I was fairly emotionless throughout the whole move but once I got hear my heart just broke.  I felt so far from home, so far from my friends and my city.  I felt groundless, floating without anything tying me down.  It was awful....and weird since I "visit" here every couple of months over the past year.  It was different.

*I cut my thumb wide open while packing in Buffalo.  I contemplated getting stitches and went to the ER.  I was worried it was going to take all day to see a doctor and it would be super expensive so I took my own personal survey.   I asked every nurse, MD and EMT that walked by if they thought I needed stitches as I showed them my thumb.  The majority said I would probably be alright so I went home where my boyfriend and father helped me create a splint out of am emory board to keep it stiff and bandaged it up.  So far it is healing nicely but has been a total pain not to bend my thumb while moving.  Seriously: my THUMB on my RIGHT hand--I basically don't have an opposable thumb and am less evolved than a monkey.  Boo.

*When we arrived there was no running water.  It was eventually turned on but holy crap it was annoying to move heavy stuff to the fourth floor without being able to even wash your face.  There is now water.

*The worst: I was sitting with U-Haul as Erick and our friend Kris moved stuff as night fell.  Three guys walked by and made eye contact.  I held their stare.  They continued walking and on the next block there was a hipster on a bike flying down the street.  One guy ran out into the bike lane, scaring the cyclist and causing him to skid on his leg pretty far.  The guys then ran to the fallen hipster and started beating his back with something until he coughed up his wallet.  They took off and he stumbled a bit but eventually got back on his bike.  I locked up the truck went to Erick's and cried and cried that I wanted to go home.  Yeah, there may be men with loaded guns parkign in my driveway in Buffalo but at least it is my home and I know when I'm safe and when I'm not.  In a new city its starting all over.  Where to go and when.  I live alone, in the most beautiful apartment you can imagine, but in a pretty shady area sans alarm system.  It will just take some getting used to.

*The best: Vanessa is in town because she has to empty her apartment in Harlem before she moves to London.  She has been staying with me for the past few days and it has been wonderful.  It is comforting.

*The move has been very stressful on both Erick and I and we have been more at each other throats than ever before.  We have fought more in the past few days than we have in over a year.  But we are powering through and keeping communication open and flowing and working through everything that comes up.  Once I am settled things will be much more stable.  He is amazing through all this.  He put together my patio table, rebuilt a broken bookshelf, completely scrubbed the bathroom from floor to ceiling (it was covered with dust from construction).  He is amazing.

*My apartment is ridiculously gorgeous.  It is the most stunning place I have ever lived--by far.  I have a sweet patio and already set up my patio furniture and the hammock is next.  I have central air and beautiful sliding glass door to the patio.  Huge ceilings and two sky lights.  Brand new everything--fridge, stove, cabinets, floor, doors, etc.  As a result everything is still really dusty from the construction, but it is really coming together.  It is slowly becoming home as my stuff comes out of bags and boxes and find their homes.
