Last night, Joe Beals (another American PhD student) and I got together for drinks and conversation, and ended up inventing a drink that we think has a lot of potential. It's not perfected yet, but it's getting there. What you need:
Gin
Tonic water, chilled
Lemon zest or twist (probably 2 twists - the lemon taste has to be pretty strong).
Peppermint tea (bag is easier, but loose could work, I guess).
Steep the tea in the measure of gin, until gin starts to turn tea-colo(u)red (aprox 2min). Squeeze teabag (or strain loose tea) and discard. Pour over ice into glass, add measure of tonic and lemon zest or twist (not as much as you would think). Ideally, strain again to remove lemon zest, but that's not strictly necessary. The resulting drink has a gin-and-tonic base, with a lovely mint-lemon combination if the proportions are done correctly. It may also be possible to do the whole thing in a martini shaker and then strain after letting it steep (which would be a pretty suave way of mixing it), but we didn't try that.
Now, what to call it? Because of the frankly over-the-top and very funny action of making a cocktail (rather British) and adding tea (extremely British), we were leaning towards calling it an "Insufferable Bastard". Suggestions welcome.
