Ok, just saw two trailers relating about the Viking Age. The first is an animated film called The Secret of Kells, that deals with an Irish lad who must face Viking marauders in order to complete the Book of Kells. Actually, looks interesting. Trailer can be viewed here.

The second I'm not exactly sure what to make of. It's apparently becoming available to buy/rent here in America tomorrow. It's called Outlander, and follows a space traveler who lands in 8th c. Norway. He's hunting a "dragon" that is now loose in the country. From the names, it looks like it's following the tale of Beowulf. (*sigh* Why do they always keep the Anglo-Saxon version of the names even when they do actually set it in Norway?) Like I said, not sure what to make of it. The trailer can be found here. It does have the wonderful Sophia Myles and John Hurt in it, but the reviews I've seen are mixed, usually towards the bad. The clothing interpretations for Sophia Myles' (Freya) are...different (or at least the apron interpretation). Looks like two body panels that are laced up the sides and has an embroidered panel in the front. (Best picture of the lacing found here, best shot of the front found here.) I wonder about the fact that it appears her underdress is open/torn just underneath the arm, almost like someone didn't want to put in the gusset. Looks like it has bias tape around the neck, but maybe it's supposed to be tablet weaving? And from this pic, it looks like the arms are detachable. And you can see the details on the apron dress straps: braided ribbons or leather? It's actually not the worst Norse woman's clothing that I've seen from a movie (*cough*Beowulf&Grendelwiththechamises&bodices&cotehardies*cough*), but it is odd. There's also a purple sleeveless dress that I'm not going to comment on at the moment.
