geesh.. so much has happened since the last post I couldn't possibly cath y'all up. So I'll get pick up from here. I'm at UCSB right now attending a Summer Calif. Nanosystems Institute for the next couple of weeks. We stay in dorms ride bike to campus, the whole University life. I am so in love with the idea of getting a university level education

As far as the nursing vs. researcher as a career choice, nursing pays a whole lot more then being a researcher, unless you have your Ph.D. But if you are more interested with having your career be your passion and money isn't a huge issue, I say go the research route.
Be thankful you are at UCSB now instead of as a young college student. I think it is safe to say that every single person I knew who went to UCSB when I did screwed up at one point in time, some getting kicked out or being put on academic probation, from too much partying. In my opinion, it's better that you are doing this now when you got the partying out of your system and are 100% motivated.

Not that money isn't an issue, but I hate working for money and I'd rather go hungry and grow veggies to feed the family while making a great contribution. If at all possible, which I don't know if it is, but if so, I would love to participate in research.

But you also have to consider that as you gain experience, your salary will go increase, no matter what field you are in.
I think it is entirely possible for you to go the research route and still bring in a good amount of dough. And there is so much to be said for actually enjoying your job and having passion for your career. It is worth making less money to have that, IMO.
