“Jeez, it’s pouring, isn’t it?” America exclaimed, peering out at the rain from the wooden porch of the convenience store, bag of pork rinds tucked under his arm. “Wasn’t like that two seconds ago…”
Lithuania chuckled, deciding not to mention that the sky had been thick with rain clouds all day and that the weather report predicted heavy showers that day. But, he supposed, the only shower on America’s mind was the one he was going to take after his next intense workout. He shifted the grocery bag full of junk food in his arms, intending to keep the contents dry with his body. “Good thing I brought your umbrella, then, Mr. America.” he commented, reaching for the small umbrella in his coat pocket; what wonderfully convenient things, those miniature umbrellas.
America gaped down at him. “You-what? Dude, where did that come from?”
Lithuania had to look at his feet to avoid the sudden attention. “I thought you might need it, so I brought it in my pocket.”
The blonde nation leaned back to stare Lithuania’s backside up and down, and once satisfied rocked back forward on his feet. He was genuinely confused, but just as grateful. With a broad grin he took the umbrella from Lithuania’s thin hand, and popped it open, revealing one hell of a star spangled pattern, something endearingly ridiculous about the zealous nation.
“Great thinking, Liet! Knew I could always count on you!”
Too busy smiling and musing the possibility that he was blushing, Lithuania didn’t fully process that now that America had something to keep him and his pork rinds dry, he had stepped off the patio and was trekking in the direction of the house he kept in this particular southern town. It took said blonde realizing that there wasn’t a feminine brunette by his side and shouting at him for Lithuania to snap out of his daze. If he wasn’t red in the face before, he definitely was now.
“S-sorry, Mr. America! I guess I zoned out for a second there…”
“It’s alright, Liet! You’re here now, aren’t you?”
Lithuania glanced up at America, wondering if he had understood what he just said. No…maybe he was thinking too much on the matter. They had known each other for decades, but that surely wasn’t long enough for some of the sappy things that came out of America’s mouth to hold water. Probably just something he heard while watching one of his hundreds of movies and decided to repeat it. That made sense.
“Uh-wait a second, where’s your umbrella?” America asked, sounding as if some great injustice had been wrought upon his Baltic friend. “Did you forget it?”
Lithuania looked up at him, then back down, and sighed, moving his fingers nervously along one of the packages of candy in the shopping bag. “Ah, no, I just…didn’t bring myself one.” He stammered. “Which…I guess means I forgot…” He had been so focused on bringing America’s that he completely disregarded his own need for one. Strange, considering how often it rained at his house.
America made a face, shifted the pork rinds under the arm holding the umbrella, and pulled Lithuania closer with his recently freed arm. “Here, just stay with me and you can share, alright? I don’t mind!”
“M-Mr. America! I couldn’t-”
“Hey, I said I’d help you out whenever you needed it, right? It’s alright, man,” America assured, smiling the smile that melted Lithuania’s heart, “I’m here for you.”
Lithuania sighed, casting his green eyes up at his dear friend. “…Thank you, Mr. America.” he said, looking back down and nestling against America’s side, under the warm encasement of his arm. “I’m…here for you, too.”
“Good! So if you ever need to share an umbrella with me, you’re more than welcome to!”
“I’ll remember that.”
Lithuania felt the distinct pressure of lips against his head, and tried his best to not flinch at the contact. It was rare that anything gentler than a yank of his hair was befallen upon him. Then he remembered just who he was with, and relaxed against him, face burning a bright red.
