Personality: For the most part Riddick is withdrawn, with reclusive and sociopathic tendencies. He doesn’t trust others easily, having been strangled with his umbilical cord and thrown in a dumpster. Also Riddick has a loathing for mercenaries and anyone tied to mercenaries, most likely stemming from his time on sigma 3 and being hunted by mercs. The furian shows no remorse or hesitation in killing and often likes to shock others and scare them. However, he doesn’t just go in for the kill with everyone he meets, usually it’s some type of law enforcement official, someone that works for the slam he’s locked up in, or a merc. He has a very dark and slightly cynical sense of humor.

His most driving property though is his survival instinct and will to live, and at the same time can be somewhat self deprecating. Not believing that he is human anymore, and that other people shouldn’t die for him or want to be like him. Despite his hardened attitude he seems to have a soft spot for kids, and for those who show a certain type of determination.

History: The earliest part of Riddick’s life depends on who it is telling the story. The furyan believed that his own mother was the one who wrapped his own umbilical cord around his neck and tossed him into a trash bin, though according to the second movie this was act of genocide being carried out by the Necromonger’s Lord Marshal Zhylaw. In either case this caused Riddick to likely become the reason behind Riddick’s detachment from most other humans.

According to the novel Riddick later came to be a company commander on a planet called Sigma 3. During which time he served as a sweeper and his actions there are what first got him sent to the slam, Deep storage. From there Riddick became a criminal escaping from one slam (prison) and the next with relative ease. Each time he manages to use a combination of stealth and distraction by riots or fights to escape. Among those escaped early on are the Hubble Bay Penal Facility, Ribald S Correctional Institute, Tangiers Penal Colony, among other places. At some point there was a psychological evaluation compiled on Riddick which stated that he was a violent sociopath and a murderer. Also with the number of deaths that kept following him, Riddick really no longer considered himself human.

Eventually Riddick is caught by a mercenary named Johns and taken to Butcher Bay. It’s here that Riddick acquires his trademark Eyeshine, though by one story the surgery is performed by a doctor for 20 menthol kools and another it’s a Furyian ability that had lain dormant and was awakened. Escaping yet again he is eventually finally tracked down once again by Johns who in place of using quicker more populated means of transport picks a ghost lane (back path between planets) on a vessel called the Hunter Gratzner. Unfortunately the ships captains is killed by debris from a passing comet and the ship is knocked out of the shipping lane and forced to crash land on Planet M6-117, also known as Hades or the Dark Planet, which Riddick being one of only a few survivors.

While on the planet is initially feared by most of the other survivors and blamed for the initial deaths of one. However as the truth comes to light about the bioraptors and the fact that there’s something deadlier than Riddick on the planet that might well be responsible for the death of every living creature that once was on the planet. However, the creatures seem to be photophobic and stick to the caves and darkness which seems like a bonus to the survivors since the planet has three suns and apparently no night; at least until they discover an astrological model. Using the model Caroline uncovers a horrifying truth; that soon the planet will experience an eclipse as it passes through the shadow of a larger planet and be covered in a pitch black darkness. In order to escape they have to convert energy from the power cells in the original ship into something that a smaller ship they discovered in an abandoned city can use; though just as they load the cells onto a cart the eclipse occurs cutting the power to all the devices that were solar driven.

Noticing the patterns of the bioraptors, Riddick realizes that they are drawn to the scent of blood. While guiding the others back towards the escape reveals the fact that a young boy, Jack, was in fact a young girl who has just begun menstruating making her scent especially attractive to the bioraptors which were stalking them. When Johns suggests leaving Jack behind to lure the creatures away, Riddick instead wounds Johns and leaves him as the bait.

Soon the group is whittled down to Riddick, Fry, Jack and the Muslim Imam; Riddick has the other three wait in a nearby cave with bioluminescent worms that will keep the creatures at bay while he proceeds with the heavy power cells. Concerned, Caroline follows Riddick and finds him ready to take the escape craft by himself but manages to convince him to help rescue Jack and Imam. Moved by her determination and that fact that she would die for the other two, Riddick goes with her to save the other two; ultimately being slowed down as he confronts a set of bioraptors and the others reach the ship.

Caroline goes back after Riddick, hearing his scream and then coming across him as he stumbles wounded by the creatures. Though as she helps him stand and states that she would die for Jack and Imam she wouldn't die for him; only to be impaled and carried off by one of the raptors. Making his way to the ship, Riddick powers the ship up and prepares to take off though just before taking off he seemingly shuts everything down while the bioraptors climb along the outside of the ship. When Jack asks what he’s doing Riddick responds that they can’t leave without saying goodnight before punch the throttle and causing the ship to take off and setting several bioraptors on fire by the exhaust and killing several others with the off cast light and force of impact from crashing into the vessel.

Unfortunately the ship that picks them up just happens to be a merc ship. One run by a woman who considers men such as Riddick to be art pieces, their murders being works to cherished and marveled at. She plans for Riddick to astonish her with his work as an artist, and that he will become a piece of her collection of some of the most violent and renowned killers of men through the universe. As he has a habit of though, Riddick manages to escape; though only through an act which catches both him and Imam off guard when Jack kills her. Which is why Riddick feels she needs to stay away from him, leaving her on New Mecca in the care of Imam.

For the next six years he spends his time on a frozen heap of a planet, hiding from Mercs and from all of humanity in general. Eventually though he's tracked down by Toombs, a man chasing a bounty put on Riddick by an air elemental after Imam told her about Riddick. So her returns to New Mecca, to all the brightness and humanity he doesn't care for to get the bounty off his head; and to see her.

First Person Sample: [5-10 structured sentences]
Usually don’t black out. Least not all the way, not even in cyro. Seems unusual to not know how I got from one place to the next, but I guess I’m here. So all that really matters is how I get out and how to get back to where-ever the hell I was goin before.

Heard them talking about some kind of disease, something that’s making everyone sick. They’re wanting us to find some type of solution, to help out. But I’m not really good at that savin lives thing, and frankly I don’t really give a damn about some backwater planet dyin from a common cold. Gotta give ‘em credit though, never really seen a place locked down quite like this, outside of a slam that is.

Icarus huh, guess we’ll just have to see how to fly the coop.

Write it out Sample:
Riddick opened his eyes, his goggles had fallen and were drapped around his neck so he winced at first as the sun stung his eyes. As the silver orbs shut and a hand blocked out the light he remembered the voice of a woman, a woman that had been pleading for his help. It wasn’t anything new to Riddick, he had been having the same hallucination since the events at Butcher Bay, since his eyes had been shined. Though this time it was a little different; rather than speaking about his home, about Furya, it was about some other place though it was all still fuzzy to him.

Sitting up the Furyan pulled the goggles to cover his eyes as he looked around the sidewalk where he had been left. The place sure as hell wasn’t Hades, and didn’t exactly resemble New Mecha either. Jack, Imam, neither of them were around either, at least not so far as Riddick could tell. Pulling the hood up of the cowl that he was wearing, Riddick picked up the shiv that had still be lying beside him. Unusual, if the place really was a slam it seemed odd that they would have left the shiv there for him to find. Then again in some slams it was more of a game than a prison, one to see who could survive and who would be the first to die. Luckily for Riddick he was good at the killing part.

Sticking to the shadows of an abandoned building, he watched several people pass by. Listening to the talk about a disease, politics, and the city, he gradually pieced a few things together about the place he was dumped. Once or twice he reached out from a shattered window pressing the blade oh so lightly against the back of their neck before they would say something new. No reason to kill anyone yet, not when he still could use them to figure out more about his place. Hearing footsteps enter the building though, he retreated, climbing towards the ceiling and lying flat on one of the rafters where a single echo seemed to fill his ears. The voice familiar, the same woman from his vision before he woke, ”Welcome to Icarus.”

”Icarus, hell of a name for a place.”

Other Notes: I said I'd come back eventually.
