Question for the freelancers

Anyway, I really want to start freelancing it up and I've SLOWLY (but surely, dangit!) started building my kit, but I'm so stuck about the foundation. What did YOU do when you were building your kit? What foundation do you use? Did you get that first? I don't even know what to ask, lol. It's just so frustrating because..foundation is frustrating. :( I'm just not sure where to start.
