That's so funny - I just asked how to de-pot my urban decay palettes. I hope someone knows how. I don't have any suggestions on what to put them in except a cd case - that's what I'm planning on doing with mine.
I don't know how I would go about taking them out of the UD pallets. Both of the things that I mentioned are just surrounded by foam, so it shouldn't be too hard.
Wow. This community is reading my mind tonight. I just got a whole bunch of new colors this afternoon that I'm going to depot and create a master palette for myself (I haven't figured out all the details of *how* yet.) But I definitely have the same problem of all the different packages and not being able to use them as effectively. Which is a shame, because they're all so pretty!
What I'm leaning towards, is buying black foam from the craft store and cutting out the shapes of what I want to match the depotted shadows. Mounting it on some type of cardboard with magnets so they pop out easily enough. I wanted to try and create some kind of a cover, so the shadows don't break all over and mix with other shades.
Since you're planning this project too, do you think that would work?

I can't really help on how to depot, because i did mine with really cheap one dollar pallets, but around christmas time i received a lot of very small & thin gift boxes that usually had money/gift cards in them, and i actually glued the pans in the box, and then put an elastic ban over them to keep them shut. I'm sure they can be found somewhere, lately i've found some cute (but bigger) ones at my Dollar Store. They look like this:
What palettes do you normally use to store round shadows? You could remove the insert from any size palette, depot and magnetize these shadows and stick 'em in. Lots more fit when you pull the inserts out of MAC palettes; a lot of pros do that apparently. HTH!
I don't have a Mac pallet :/ I have like fifty singles that I keep in my traincase. I can't afford one now, but I hope to switch to doing what you suggested eventually.
Check out the Paperchase section at Borders. They make a bunch of cute aluminum pencil cases (ie, magnatized!). I have several of them, they are super cute.
