Sherlock Holmes last night...
Now for those who don't know me, I am one of those frightening avid fangrls of the Original Sherlock Holmes and Mostly a Purist at that.
I could stomache Young Sherlock Holmes, okay I liked it But I Also go on record as saying Most "adaptations" (or as I call them Bastard Children) of the sainted works make me nearly see red.
If the authors A.D. (After Doyle) weren't just trying to capitalize on the fame and fortune that Holmes created pre-everything-made-into-franchises, I Might look on them with more forbearance. But let's call a scam a scam shall we?
But this movie, though Still a bastard child born out of Doyle-lock, was superbly done. It wasn't trying to pass itself off as Doyle-Lite. It was merely taking a few of the characters and basically doing a fan-fic with them and doing so with more than a little grace and love given over to the Master of the works.
Bobby (Robert Downy Jr.) made a wonderful Holmes. Played with much more pizazz and verve than his predecessors, as well as adding a bit more depth and Actual humanity to him in the process. I had had my doubts about Jude Law as Watson but those doubts were laid to rest when I saw how the Neo-Watson and the Neo-Holmes bounced off each other. Just as I remembered and felt the actual characters from my beloved series would.
Some of the scenes were more than priceless and impossible to relate without spoiling first-time watchers. Rest assured, if you are a dyed-in-the-wool Holmes fan as I am, you will Not be disappointed or offended by this new story. The people doing it gave it a great deal of loving care one might hope from another fan whether the people making the movie were or not.
Yes yes I admit Robert Jr. does offer up some tasty eye-candy but his own wit and humor and depth add to the role instead of just making it another "made for the stars" vehicle. And those Jude Law fans will be happy to note, if you know SH movies of old, Jude holds his own and is Not, I Repeat Not the Basil Rathbone generation's Tonto-Watson. Jude's Watson gave as good as he got and adventured (albeit grudgingly at points [grinz]) along side his long time friend and brother in spirit, Holmes. He knew as much, saw almost as much as Holmes did and often came to the same place of deductive reasoning at the same moment as Holmes. Not Once did they dumb down Watson like so many other movies/series have. While in the beginning of the Original Series by the great Sir Arthur, Watson had to learn the tricks of the trade, at the point this movie would have happened (Had it Happened) Watson would Indeed have been Holmes' Peer and beloved second man. And that is something I have found Few series or movies have shown. So you Jude Law fans, fear not that your hero has been relegated to a dumb hero-worshiping minion to the 'greater Holmes'. Why, Watson even punches Holmes in the nose at one point! Fancy that! Would a toady follower do that?? I think Not! LOL
Now there are two love interests in this... One for Jude and one for Bobby.
Mary (Watson's bride-to-be) is played by somebody I didn't know. But that means little because unless somebody's a stellar actress of interest to me or a fellow Gemini, I seldom recognize them. The same can be said of Irena (Holmes' love interest). No clue who she was.
I will give them this, as the auxiliary players, they didn't slouch too terribly in their roles. Admittedly, they were Obviously "the love interests" without Too much heavy weigh or power to shift the focus on to them. I would guess many of my Femme de Puissance readers will find this offensive. (Along with Bobby being one of the principal actors)
But I must remind you that the movie itself was not Meant to focus on the females in their lives in the first place. So before you get out your Joan de Arc cos-play outfit and come charging through with your Sword of Femme de la Droiture... Please spare me the tirade. We All know how you feel about women being subservient and/or Seemingly lesser to men. If it makes you feel any better, you know women aren't second class citizens and are just as mouthy and pushy as their male counterparts. Actually, considering some of the cat fights I've witnessed over the years, I'd say women (at least the ones I know) have the males beat hands down in that arena. So sit back, relax and keep in mind that while You might feel superior to all things male, it doesn't have to mean you can't enjoy a good old fashion male driven eye-candified movie with your lesser "brilliant" sisters who actually don't give a shit about the politics of the whole mess.
All in all, it was well worth the denar laid down to see it and I must say, I'm looking forward to a second viewing and owning of it when it's out on DVD.
Logically speakingly (of eye candy) here,
♥~me
P.s. The words thrown in there are in French... Look'em up.
Learned ya somethin new, dinni. XD
