60 Minutes

On 60 Minutes tonight, there was a story about neuroscience and communication. It involved planting electrodes either on the surface or in the interior of the brain to enable human interaction. Normally, I don't blog about these kinds of things, but I find it so incredible and amazing. One interviewee suffers from Lou Gerigh's disease and lost all motor functions except for eye movement.

Thanks to researchers at Brown University in neuroscience, this man can now manipulate a mouse cursor, speak and respond to questions using a computer. I don't know if people realize how much this matters.

When I was an undergrad, I had a conversation witht he Cognitive Psych prof about the electrical signals in the brain, and the impulse of neurons firing, and he dismissed it as "science-fiction" nonsense. Well, looks like I was right.

If you have a few moments, try to find the interview online. It is simply incredible.

Amazing stuff. They even show a woman controlling an electric wheelchair by using her brain alone.

I don't know what else to say.
