RE: California Registered Domestic Partner Rights and Responsibilities Act
Effective January 1, 2005, Assembly Bill 205, known as the California
Domestic Partner Rights and Responsibilities Act of 2003 (the Act),
extended the rights and responsibilities of spouses to couples
registered as domestic partners with California Secretary of State
(Registered Domestic Partners). The provisions of the Act affect students who have
applied or would like to apply for state and institutional financial
aid only, not to federal student financial aid programs. Registered
Domestic Partners are given a Declaration of Domestic Partnership
certificate (or SEC/STATE LP/SF DP-1) from the California Secretary of State. No other
type of domestic partnership is recognized by the Act.
If you or the parent who provided information on your Free Application
for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is a Registered Domestic Partner, you
must provide income and household size information for you or your
parent's partner. (Please note: Partner information is not required if
the partnership was registered after the date your FAFSA was filed or if
the partners are currently separated.)
If you have not already filed a FAFSA but would like to be considered
for state and institutional aid, you must complete the FAFSA first.
Remember, the Registered Domestic Partner's Information will NOT be
provided on the FAFSA but will be reported to the SSU Financial Aid
Office by you after the FAFSA is filed.
