So much happening. So much to do.
We drove my tiny tiny Isaac to college to move him in. I bought him pretty much all his stuff in the few days before we left. I got nearly all his judaica (that he didn’t yet have) for free from heritage judaica. So awesome.
Isaac got more observant in Israel. He is now putting on tefillin and davening shacharit every morning, and doing a lot of sabbath observance. I bought him a sabbath lamp shaped like a mushroom. Is v cute. In setting up his dorm room, we hung his mezuzah that he bought in Israel first thing. I just ordered him travel Shabbat candlesticks. He made me fast for tisha b’av; he did the not shaving etc for the days before it, too. We’ll see how far he goes.
His dorm is exactly like most freshman dorms. The move in was like clockwork; they had moving teams to bring the stuff up to your rooms for you. We unpacked him and then bought him a microwave and small fridge (and various storage containers and pots) because I am a squishy pushover and want him to have all the things. I also quick set up a marketplace bike purchase for him. I think it’ll be a good town to have a bike in. The guy messaged me afterwards to tell me that Isaac is a very nice young man. ❤️
Patrick drove us up and me back. It was a very chill 12 hr drive both ways. Patrick has always liked to drive while I sleep and I like this also. It’s so easy with grownups. We stayed in a nice Airbnb that was a whole two bedroom/two bathroom/living room/kitchen unit, cute and simple. The weirdest thing was that the water DID NOT GET COLD. We can always get cold water in MN, no matter how hot it’s been. The water there was lukewarm at coldest.
Probably because Oklahoma is hot af. It was nearly 100 degrees while we were there. As it happened, MN was also around 100 that period, but we spent the next week in the 70s and 80s, while OK spent it all in the upper 90s. Luckily Isaac was just living in the desert this summer so he’s inured.
How am I doing? Not bad. I have three kids left and Isaac messages me every day for advice and feedback and support. Also He’ll be back before I know it. Three months is like the blink of an eye to a 44-yr-old.
I need to let go of worrying about his life choices. He’s a grownup now.
love,
children,
isaac
