Yes, I admit I am a tender heart when it comes to animals of any kind.
It's true that the rabbit population at Greenlake is out of control because assholes dump their kid's easter gifts once they get too big and they stop wanting the grown rabbit as a pet. It's true that there are rabbits all over the park, the baseball and soccer fields, and in the surrounding neighborhoods.
Last night on his way home from the store BRK saw one get hit by a car. Of course the driver didn't stop. BRK came into the house looking ashen. No one wants to see that happen to a cute little critter. He got some of our old towels and went to get it out of the road. He laid it down in a little corner pea patch so it didn't have to die on the cold concrete. It kicked around a little, probably in such a panic and in pain. There was nothing else we could do. We figured it wouldn't be long anyway.
Well, shit. This morning on my way to the bus I went around the block the long way so I could check on it.... and SHIT, it was still breathing. That broke my heart. Poor thing had been out in the cold all night. I went back and started calling all around to see what could be done, either to help it, or to euthanize it. (probably the latter) You can't really be a bunny, take a blow from a car doing 35mph, and be rehabilitated.
No facility was open yet. All answering machine messages pointed me back to PAWS, which is in Lynnwood, and they don't come get animals... and we don't have a car.
In tears, I woke BRK up and he came out to the street with me. He wrapped a towel around it and gently scooped it up into a cardboard box lined with more towels. It was still scared and tried to kick him away a couple of times before relenting. (god) And then I had to leave for work. So BRK is home trying to keep it warm and safe, and is calling around to see what can be done.
Should we have left it in the road so it would have been over quicker? Would that have actually been the more humane thing to do? Neither of us could bear to do that. I hope he can find someone to come. He just got off the phone with animal control, and they might as well have been the tow-truck guy, "yep, I put in the call," click. I don't want someone to come who will just toss it in the the back of a truck. Can't someone caring come? Can't PAWS have a branch not in Lynnwood?
