I had the weirdest thing happen to me, every now and then I'll hear a piece of music, or see something random that causes me to think of how I would use it in film, this came to me earlier in the car. I don't really know where it came from, but when it finished I was struck by a sudden rush of emotion that caught me off guard. I could see it all playing out in my head and I just sort of stopped what I was doing until the song finished and then played it again to recapture the vision.
(Camera opens on a man arguing with who we assume is his wife.)
Now I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
(We see a tear glinting down only to splash in a pool of those that fell before it)
It goes like this
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah
(Camera pans to reveal man is crying as his wife leaves, taking a child with her.)
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
(Jump to man sitting in chair with three quarters empty bottle of whiskey and a knocked over class seemingly forgotten)
She tied you
To a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah
(The television is only showing static, mesmerizing him)
Baby I have been here before
I know this room, I've walked this floor
I used to live alone before I knew you.
(He drops his head into his hands and begins to shake with tears)
I've seen your flag on the marble arch
Love is not a victory march
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah
(Grabbing his keys he staggers towards the front door)
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
There was a time you let me know
What's really going on below
But now you never show it to me, do you?
(Montage of him starting the car, driving away down a deserted four lane street, hitting every light as it turns green)
And remember when I moved in you
The holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was Hallelujah
(In a dream sequence we see him meeting his future wife when her grocery bag splits open and he bends down to help her pick up a mostly destroyed carton of eggs.)
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
You say I took the name in vain
I don't even know the name
But if I did, well really, what's it to you?
(Fast forward to them watching a movie on a couch, with her lying down using his side as a pillow while he strokes her hair)
There's a blaze of light
In every word
It doesn't matter which you heard
The holy or the broken Hallelujah
(In a fancy restaurant he drops to one knee and proposes to her, she cries with happiness and embraces him)
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
I did my best, it wasn't much
I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch
I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you
(He comes home having lost his job to find his wife packing her suitcases, a calender establishes that five years have gone by)
And even though
It all went wrong
(He tries to talk to her, but she won't look at him until he grabs her arm and she strikes him)
I'll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
(Replaying the beginning scene of her leaving with their child and then jumping to him driving along the coast)
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
(As the music starts to crescendo he loses control of the car, going headlong into a telephone pole. Right when the music pauses he is ejected through the windshield and off a cliff heading towards the ocean. As he realizes what is happening he closes his eyes and reveals a hint of a smile, preparing to come crashing down into the only thing he has left.
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah
(A scene with a lone ambulance with a body bag being loaded into the back slowly fades to black as the music fades with it.)
I can only hope that someday either I or someone else gets the opportunity to make this idea into a tangible piece of video.
