“Jessica.”

Jessica looked up, her eyes shining as she nodded. Yes? She urged the voice to continue; it was a gentle voice that had an edge - as if it were a gem which had been found in its purest of states and had not been sanded-down yet. She could not understand why, but Jessica felt comforted by the voice - as if it had lulled her from nightmares before and as if it had cared for her in the past. But it hadn’t. Had it?

“Jessica,” the other girl said again, waving her hand to get the older girl’s attention once more. “Do you want to go anywhere today, Jessica?”

Jessica attempted to focus this time, her eyes trailing along the girl’s beautifully structured face as she pondered her answer. Her hand reached out and intertwined with a lock of the other girl’s hair suddenly and she twisted the unnatural, yet fitting, color between her index and middle finger.

“Yes.”

Jessica noticed that the other girl had tensed and she brought her hand back towards her own body slowly.

“Where can we go, Hyoyeon?”

Hyoyeon’s eyes grew dark and her canine tooth bit into her bottom lip as she stood from the sitting position the two of them had been sharing on the wooden floor of Jessica’s apartment. Her hands shook with uncertainty - as they always did when it was her turn to visit Jessica (the girl she had once knew, had once shared a room with, had once shared stories of love and despair with, had once cared for tenderly, had once cried for--) and she nodded her head as she ran a hand through her hair and considered the possibilities.

“Let’s go to the park, Jessica. Is that...” her voice faltered for a moment when her eyes met Jessica’s and her mind registered the confusion which surrounded Jessica’s pupils, “is that okay, Jessica?” She forced her cheeks upward in a weak attempt to smile as she closed her eyes and tilted her head to the side, trying to seal the tears in. “Would you like to go to the park with me, Jessica? It’s me: Hyoyeon.”

Jessica nodded, her eyes lighting up as the confusion was cast to the side recklessly (only to return later, Hyoyeon knew) and she stood, brushing off any dust which might have settled on her shorts.

“I’ll go get my stuff!” she said softly, her smile sparkling as Hyoyeon simply nodded to show Jessica that she had heard. Hyoyeon’s fingernails dug into her palms and her bottom lip cried out in pain as she applied pressure to both. With her eyes closed tightly, she let out a frustrated sigh.

“Hyoyeon….?"

Jessica’s cold touch shocked her system as Jessica’s fingers touched the backside of Hyoyeon’s left hand hesitantly and her eyes glanced at Hyoyeon’s own watery ones.

“Is something wrong?”

Yes. You. Where are you, Jessica? What’s wrong with you - what happened to you; why are you like this?

Hyoyeon shook her head no slowly and willed her teeth to leave her bottom lip as she attempted to give another fake smile.

“I’m fi-”

“Ah!”

Jessica’s index finger placed pressure upon Hyoyeon’s bottom lip and Hyoyeon froze, trying to decipher what was happening.

“You’ve hurt yourself…”

Jessica gave a look of disapproval and wiped the blood off the lip as she lead Hyoyeon to the kitchen, opening various drawers quickly as she looked for her first-aid kit.

“C’mere,” she cooed as she applied alcohol to a cotton ball and glanced over Hyoyeon’s bottom lip, mumbling apologies as Hyoyeon hissed softly. “Be more careful, silly.”

Hyoyeon’s words escaped her as she attempted once more to hold her tears back. This, this was just like the Jessica she knew. This was the Jessica who’s gentle touch was a gift to each member; this was the Jessica she missed. As Jessica began to pull away, Hyoyeon brought her arms around the small frame and squeezed her tightly against her own body, choking back a sob into Jessica’s thin shoulder.

“Hyoyeon…?”

Jessica didn’t attempt to pull away though. They stayed like that for just a moment before Hyoyeon let the girl loose and smiled apologetically.

“Ah... I don’t know what came over me. I’m sorry.” She kept the smile snug between her cheekbones as she discarded the cotton ball from Jessica’s fingers. She then slid her left pinky between Jessica’s own pinky and ring finger and linked them forcefully before looking up. “Are you ready to go?”

Jessica smiled brightly and Hyoyeon tried to hold back her wince.

“Sure,” Jessica began as she jumped, excited. “Where are we going?"

Hyoyeon’s crestfallen expression could be missed by no one, not even Jessica.

Hyoyeon missed her roommate.
