Okay so following his heart didn't work out before. His love for Bruce had ended up with them divorcing and barely speaking so his head he had to follow. It was the last thing he could completely trust in this world. His head. It held everything he had to know, controlled his entire body and it had been hacked into by a computer virus only years ago when he decided to get Extremis for himself.
In short, his head was pretty amazing. Perhaps because was accused of having no heart, Tony refused to acknowledge it as a good way to make decisions, or perhaps it was because when he did follow his heart, everything always went wrong in the end. It never went wrong if he used his head in tough situations and left his heart out of it. In fact, it all went so much better.
