What you'll have to do is tell them what you are doing before they can ask you to do something with them. Either that or "Id love to ... But I'm doing ..../ I need to do..." rather than a straight "No" is harder to argue against. They are either being bossy or are trying to make sure you are not on your own and moping. If the former then yes, backbone is needed; if the latter it's sweet of them, but very annoying for you.
My mum was just being sweet, but my sister and friend were definitely bossy, I had to tell my friend that I was going home at 10.30, because I was shattered and yet they would have had me out later.
