PG16 (maybe R) | 1830 words
Dry twigs snapped beneath his feet as he rushed through the foliage, fingers snatching the branch of a tree as he skidded to a halt just outside a small clearing. A cold breeze blew past his face, tempering the skin and sending a hint of blood to his senses.
Edward stepped forward, a sliver of the setting sun peeking through dense evening fog, sent a dull shimmer to his skin as he moved further into the clearing. His eyes surveyed the overgrown grass, gold eyes zoning in on a pale white form buried beneath a thin layer of damp leaves. Thick fog wove between the trees, blanketing the sun as he stared down at the body, a mess of thick brown hair tangled around her shoulders.
He knelt down, his hand hesitant as he reached forward, his fingers gently brushing away the leaves and dirt from her face. A wave of cold air filled his lungs, sending a chill down his spine as his knees gave out and he fell back into the damp grass.
Edward stared at the girl, his tawny eyes locked on her stark white face when a stirring of leaves echoed behind him. He snapped his head around, a feral snarl ripping from his throat until he saw Alice standing at the base of the clearing.
“I saw.” She said, her voice barely a whisper. Her statement didn’t calm him as a low growl reverberated in his chest and he pushed up from the ground. Alice took a step towards him but he maneuvered around her, his eyes blazing as he entered the forest. “Edward…” she called after him but he ignored her, blocking out all noises as he began to run towards town.
As soon as he cleared the forest and his feet hit the pavement of the driveway, he stopped. His jaw clenched as he slammed open the door, the glass inset shattering on impact with the wall.
Carlisle and Esme were the first to assess the noise, Jasper following close behind as all their faces reflected concern for him. Jasper took a step forward but stopped when Edward’s voice halted him, his tone dark “Track him.”
Silence filled the entryway of the large house, Jasper faltered as he spoke softly, “I can’t…” he began, those two words eliciting a lethal glare from the younger Cullen, “…we can’t get involved… if they find out that you turned him, they’ll ki…”
“Find him now!” Edward spat, cutting him off. A crunch of broken glass by the door echoed in their ears but none of them acknowledged the sound. Alice sighed, her soft voice attempting to break the tension in the room, “Jasper, do as he says.”
The blonde took a deep breath, dropping his gaze from Edward’s scrutinizing eyes. Bringing a hand up to rub his temple, his eyes closed momentarily as he sighed, “He’s already here.”
An instinctual growl echoed as Edward turned around sharply, his eyes narrowed at Alice as she diverted her gaze quickly from the second floor. His eyes narrowed further as he glanced momentarily at the stairs before returning his gaze on her. The glare intimidated Alice and her voice hesitated, “I didn’t tell you because he hadn’t made a decision yet…”
Carlisle extended a hand out towards Edward’s shoulder but he brushed him off. “Leave the house and don’t follow me.” He demanded, moving around Alice to rush up the stairs towards his bedroom. The sound of a cars’ engine roared to life outside as Edward continued his pace towards the large door ahead of him.
It took him off guard to find the door completely shut, a dim light radiating from beneath the doorframe as he grasped the knob and turned.
His eyes scanned the room, sweeping over the oversized gold bed and black couch before finally resting on the teak bedside table. Sitting alone on the top was a thin string bracelet, its single adornment catching the last rays of the sun through its multi-faceted edges. Edward pulled himself forward, gravitating towards the table as his long fingers picked up the diamond heart charm.
“I thought you’d might want that back.” A low voice spoke behind him, causing his head to snap to the side. Edward’s eyes darkened; his posture bending slightly as he faced Sylar. The dim light of an overhead lamp mixed with the dying sunset created a wash of red-orange colour over the room, illuminating the rust shade of the taller man’s eyes.
Edward tucked the bracelet into his palm, clutching it as he set his jaw, “Why?” Sylar’s brilliant red eyes narrowed ever so slightly, a smirk tugging at his lips as he toyed, “Are we still talking about the bracelet?”
The sarcastic mark threw him over the edge, his slanted posture allowing him to lunge at Sylar, tackling him to the bed as he gripped the front of his black shirt. “I let you have your fun,” he snarled, bared teeth shining as his strong grip ripped the front of his shirt slightly, “Why her?!”
A low chuckle was his response, the tone deep and taunting, “You let me?” he asked with a thick layer of cynicism as he placed a flat palm against Edward’s chest. He put the barest of pressure against it, causing the man to stumble back, a look of surprise on his face as he stared at him.
“You didn’t let me do anything…” he retorted, pushing up off the bed effortlessly as he stalked forward, cornering Edward against the wall.
He smiled, the curve of his lip suggesting a sadistic intention, “I’ve reached the pinnacle…” he said, tilting his head slightly, “…and I have you to thank for it.”
Edward snapped his head back, drifting his gaze away from Sylar’s face but a strong hand grabbed his chin and pulled it back, “That…” he stated roughly, locking blood red eyes with a burning topaz, “is what I’ll let you take credit for.”
His fingers loosened around Edward’s jaw, letting a calloused thumb slide down his lower lip as he spoke softly, “I’m only here for one thing.” Edward jerked his head out of Sylar’s grip, his eyes narrow as he spat, “And what’s that?”
“I want you to realize your potential, Edward,” he said, backing up as he turned away from him and let his telekinesis fade, “It’s what Bella would have wanted…”
He expected the impending protest, a feral growl eliciting a wave of telekinesis as he turned abruptly. He circled Edward, stopping short behind him as a single finger flicked in the air, causing the younger man’s head to tilt. “Another thing has been on my mind though…” he smirked, lowering his face to the crook of Edwards’s neck as he blew icy air against his skin, “If you bite another vampire, what happens?”
His lips lingered an inch above his neck, lips parting slightly to show sharp white teeth as Edward kept still, refusing to answer. There was a heavy sigh and faint ‘tsk’ as Sylar responded to the resistance, “…that bad, huh?” He pulled away, dropping his hold as he stepped back towards the door.
“All that talk and you’re just going to leave…” Edward asked, impatience mixed with a hint of shock until he heard the lock on the door latch, the taller man’s head slowly turning towards him. The smirk returned as he stalked back towards him, “Not quite.”
Bringing up a hand, Sylar drifted his fingers down Edward’s chest, stiffening his grip and sending the man back against the bed. The force caused the headboard to slam against the wall, its metal structure bending and snapping under the pressure. Edward recovered, his eyes staring at the large concave dent in the thick wall before drifting his attention back to the newborn.
“You’re not supposed to be that strong… not even for a newborn.” he said, a fleet of shock crossing his features as Sylar’s lips curved into a wide grin. Edward pushed back, his eyes locked on the sadistic smile at the foot of the bed, as he tried to distance himself.
The smile faded, a telekinetic force ripping through the air to send the younger man into the iron wall. A momentary blindness washed over the room as Edward blinked, his eyes opening seconds later to find Sylar’s eyes, hard and cold, in front of his face. During the force of the hit, Edward had managed to bite down on his own lip, mirroring a familiar role reversal.
Bright red eyes flashed a solid black as the newborn lunged forward, closing his lips around Edward’s as he sucked greedily on the fresh blood. The bitter taste of iron danced on his tongue, sharp teeth sinking through granite skin easily as he craved for more.
A strong hand clamped against Sylar’s throat, muscles contracting to push the assailant back. He stumbled slightly but regained his composure, red eyes following the smear of blood on his lower lip as he snaked out his tongue to remove the remnants on his own.
“Such an interest in your own self-protection…” the newborn said, tilting his head and smiling as he stepped forward. Edward growled; dull gold eyes unflinching as he pushed forward, grabbing Sylar by the throat and throwing him down against the mattress. The impact snapped the remaining posts, sending the bed crashing to the hardwood floor as Edward kept the man pinned against the gold duvet.
The grip on Sylar’s throat tightened as Edward clenched his jaw but the sound of screeching tires outside pulled his attention. A smile crossed Sylar’s face as he glanced over at the bedroom door, drifting his red eyes back to the man above him, “So much for revenge.”
Edward doubled his attention between Sylar and the door, dropping the grasp on his neck as the newborn pushed Edward off of him. “Disappointing…” Sylar drawled, brushing past the other vampire as he muffled a small laugh.
“You’re going to be back…” Edward said, his voice soft as he pulled the clues from the taller man’s mind. Sylar stopped at the door, turning his head to give a slight nod, “Of course I will.”
He flashed a quick smile, unlocking the door and exiting the room. Edward watched him leave, drifting his gaze over his destroyed bedroom once the latch of the door snapped shut and he brought up his hand. The diamond heart looked dull against his pale skin as he let it toggle in his palm.
Edward kept the attention to his hand when the door opened and Alice walked in quietly, her voice almost a whisper, “I saw him make the decision to kill you…” Her gold eyes raked over his hunched appearance, as Edward’s voice interjected, his tone equally as soft, “He didn’t.”
“… you wouldn’t have objected…” she said, finishing the short conversation as she took one last glance at him, turning towards the hallway and leaving him alone in the dark.
