So remember last August when I applied for the perfect job with the UIC SEL research group, then they sent me a personal non-form-letter note asking for my references, then told me they'd start interviews in early September? Even though it was not a request for an interview yet, I was encouraged enough by their response that I went ahead and bought a job interview suit. Early September came and went, and by the beginning of October I was all crushed that they'd never called me for an interview, seeing as I AM highly qualified for this job, and seeing as my master's paper is based on these people's research.
Yeah, so TODAY, December 1, I just got the following email:
Thank you for your interest in employment with the UIC SEL Research Group. We regret to inform you that we have now filled this position and cannot offer you employment at this time. Thank you for taking the time to compile and send in your application materials. We wish you all the best with your job search.
Sincerely,
The UIC SEL Research Group
If I'd gotten this email back in September or October, I would have been really saddened and pissed off to have not gotten the job (as I was really saddened and pissed off at the time when I simply had to ASSUME I hadn't gotten the job), but could have at least given them credit for their professional courtesy and not just leaving me hanging. Thing is, sending a message like this, months later, does not have the same effect as it would have back then. Now it's more like getting a drunk dial from an ex in the middle of the night to remind you that you're still broken up.
What's worse is if this was actually a drunk dial from an ex, I could go ahead and say, "Thanks asshole, I know I don't have a chance with you! I've moved on! Why are you even bothering to call me?" But no, now I need to be the one who has professional courtesy and politely ignore this message. Grrr.
