Job hunt word of the day: sputum

Oct 27, 2009 10:12

I got an email yesterday about a research assistant position that I'm somewhat qualified to do. I have all of the things they're looking for except experience collecting samples of bodily fluids. I think I am not going to apply for this one:

Functions

§         Enroll patients in the study

§         Daily specimens collection:

1.       Blood cultures

2.       Sputum and other respiratory tract cultures

3.       Pneumococcal and Legionella Urinary antigen testing

4.       Nasopharyngeal swabs

5.       Oropharyngeal swab

§         Data entry into Microsoft Access
§         Prepare specimens for transporting to [University] Hospital Microbiology laboratory

Minimum Requirements

§         Bachelor’s degree in arts\ science or higher (preferred foreign medical graduate or medical student)

§         Ability to draw blood or keen to learn

§         Detail-oriented, reliable with attendance and timely accurate completion of study functions

§         Ability to work with a team and flexibility in completing other study tasks as needed

§         Computer and data management skills desirable
§         Protection of Human Subjects in Research competency (prior certification or ability to certify after hiring)

Note: I added the emphasis on the bullet point above. There's just something funny about the "keen to learn" bit in that one. Also, I kind of am keen to learn to draw blood. Somehow I feel like it would be kind of funny to be able to put that on my resume, outside of the context of working as a clinician (that might make me seem like a crazy person though, what with my resume also having details about my insect and spider rearing skills). So the blood part of this job doesn't put me off. It's the sputum and urine that I'm not so keen to deal with.
