I was hangin in the corner with my five best friends

I thought this would be an interesting challenge, and it was! I'm also up way too late again. Dammit.

List 10 platonic relationships on TV/Movies that you enjoy.

Rules:

1. They interact in canon, preferably in a significant (apply your own interpretation of such) way.
2. They are not related. They can, however, view each other as surrogate family.
3. Neither has confessed or implied romantic love for the other in canon.
4. They have not dated, been married, had sex, or made out in canon, on purpose, and of their own free will.
5. A popular fanon ship is ok (though preferably not your ship) but a canon pairing you wish were just friends is out.
6. Try to avoid using the same character or series twice.

1. Buffy, Willow, and Xander. (With bonus Giles). Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Their collective friendship is one of the most beautiful and enduring things in all of television. The original trio of Chosen One, Geek, and Dork! (I'm looking at you, Harry Potter!) Each side of this triangle has its own unique strength, but the three of them together is just unstoppable. With Giles, well, they can even save the world. :)

2. Harry and Hermione. Harry Potter.

I do ship them, but I also just love how much they love each other, and how they're entirely unafraid to show it even though they're of opposite genders and in school where that can easily result in teasing. They've always got each other's back, and Hermione is so sensitive to Harry's emotional state. She's done a lot of supergirl things to save the day, but she's also just been an essential support for Harry through all of his trials.

3. Ten and Donna. Doctor Who.

I ship Doctor/Rose, but Ten and Donna have the most beautiful relationship. They teach each other so much, but even though he's the world-weary time traveler and she's the flighty temp from Chiswick (right?), I think she teaches him more than vice versa. Such a gorgeous story they have.

4. Brennan and Angela. Bones.

I love every damn character on this show, and every dynamic is adorable in its own way, but Brennan and Angela are so sweet. I love that they're established best friends before we enter the story, and how even though that seems odd with how vastly different they are, it works so perfectly. Brennan's logic and self-denial balance Angela's passion and impulsiveness. They are just too sweet together.

5. Mal and Zoe. Firefly.

Those two make such a stunning pair, competent and badass and so beautifully in sync. Zoe is perfectly comfortable acting as his second in command, and Mal never takes her for granted.

6. Sam and Josh. The West Wing.

Okay, so I totally ship them, but their on screen friendship is lovely in and of itself! I mean, I could choose pretty much any dynamic among these characters - Sam and Toby, Bartlett and Leo, CJ and Josh, etc etc etc - but these boys are my favorites. They're so snarky and funny and passionate and smart. Their friendship has such history to it. My favorite scenes are STILL the flashbacks when Josh pulls Sam out of lawyer hell, and Sam just... goes with him. Out of trust. Awww.

7. Bill Adama and Kara Thrace. Battlestar Galactica.

Now, this kind of violates the related rule up there, since Kara nearly married one of Bill's sons and then completely fell in love with his other one, and Bill sees her as a daughter, but it's still technically platonic! He loves this frakked up girl to bits and tiny pieces, and they always come through the rough patches strong and true. I basically consider Kara an Adama, and this dynamic is a big part of that.

8. Riggins and Street. Friday Night Lights.

Now, I don't ship these dudes like a lot of people do, but I do have a hell of a lot of love for their friendship. They even have a motto: Texas Forever! Sometimes their friendship takes a backseat, but in the end, Rigs and Six are tight as brothers, and there's a shitload of love there. There has to be, for their friendship to survive what it has.

9. John Sheppard and Elizabeth Weir. Stargate Atlantis.

I would put John and Rodney, but those two have been doing it for years. :P John and Elizabeth, though, have such an awesome working relationship. Sometimes she's a bit too lenient with his sometimes-suicidal adventurous antics, but her "oh, boys" attitude towards him and Rodney is just too darling. And John clearly has the utmost respect for her, which is truly saying something for someone with such authority issues. She's simultaneously warm and firmly in command, which he finds both compelling and workable. It's a really great dynamic.

I'm totally drawing a blank on a 10th, and it's 4 AM, so screw the rules. :P That was really interesting though, because it's quite unusual to look at fannish material with a purely platonic eye. I realized that, 1) many many of the non-romantic relationships I'm invested in are familial, though I often want them to be romantic, cough cough, and 2) in depth portrayals of female frienships are pretty rare! I was trying to think of more girl-girl friendships but it's really, really hard. Bones and Angela are actually a kind of unique example. And I really love them all the more for it. The other exemplar of that category on this list is Buffy and Willow, of course. If I had to choose a number 10, I'd say Rory and her best friend from Gilmore Girls, but I'm totally blanking on her name. Anyway, that show is thumbs up on the female relationships all around, so kind of an anomaly. It's strange to have very few role models on the screen for a kind of relationship that is incredibly important to me (my life would be empty without my best girls). Welcome to being a girl, I suppose. >.<

Two things I think are AWESOME:
  • Cobra Starship's new video. Hot and funny and sassy, as usual! <33 Leighton Meester is positively gorgeous, and a pretty convincing lure towards Gossip Girl. Hurmmmmm. Anyway, she and Vicky-T as what they are (no spoilers!) is HOT AS HELL om nom nom.
  • NEW THE USED SINGLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Download "Blood on my Hands" at the iTunes store! Because it is AWESOME! I already know it pretty well, and I got to hear it LIVE first, but the bits where Bert sings lower sound much better on the studio version, and I always liked the song. NEEEED THIS ALBUM OMG.
