So I was in the grocery store last week, and I stopped to browse through the magazine section like I always do. One popped out at me - it proclaimed MUSCLE CARS across the top and had a gorgeous Shelby Mustang on the cover. Of course I immediately snagged it. It's part of the HOT ROD Archive Series, and contains over 200 vintage photos of muscle ( Read more... )

Impalas were around before the pony car/muscle car craze hit in the mid 60s. They were a snazzy full-size family car that started out as upgrade from another fullsize. And I would imagine that continued to account for most of their market even in the rest of the 60s. The Chevelles were very similar in style and lighter, so they were more popular with people looking to make performance cars.

Basically Impalas got muscley (SS package in particular) for the later half of the 60s like a lot of cars did, but they weren't where Chevy was putting its muscle car focus. So yeah, not at the top of the muscle car list, but what cars get on there tend to vary with who's deciding on the specific muscle-car definition.

Ahhh. I see. Very interesting! D'you know why, then, Kripke's classic car mechanic friend would suggest the Impala as the perfect Man's Man car for two boys traveling the country with shotguns looking to kill stuff? Is it just that it's big enough to keep a body in the trunk? Hee.

It was a really popular car, so it'd be easy to find lots of four-doors to make cars for the show (four doors are pretty much always cheaper than coupes, regardless of the car). I'd imagine that was part of it. It was stylish, but it's easy to believe that a dad in a family with two kids would have bought it back in the day as a car for the family as a whole. I think it probably had a nice combination of vintage style without being too in-your-face sporty or musclely. Hot, but classy. ;}

All I can give you is that, according to my dad, the Impala was the car "for the father who wanted to think he had a muscle car." Take that with as many grains of salt as you'd like. *g*

I have nothing new to add on the Impala subject, since dualbunny and bexone seem to have that covered, but I had to drop by and tell you that in my dream last night I was sitting on the porch with my brother and talking about some assignment he had to do in one of his classes and he had a list of screennames of the people in one of his distance learning classes, and your LJ name was on it and I was like "hey, I know someone with that name" and he was like "yeah, that's Anne, she's pretty cool." it was kinda strange...
