Before World War II was officially called World War II, England began taking precautions against German bomber air crafts. They set up ARP or Air Raid Precautions, an organization responsible for drills and preliminary measures in case of bombings.
The ARP instigated mass blackouts for English towns at night, so as to not give possible bombers overhead a target.

In 1977, New York experienced another blackout, this time caused by multiple lightning strikes to strategic power substations. This comes at the heels of the Son of Sam murders. The country was experiencing a financial downturn as well.
The sudden power outtage must have looked like an act of God to a suffering city. This one was pockmarked with citywide looting and arson.
The Nights the Lights went out

I think I was in year 4 or 5 of elementary school. We lived in these dilapidated buildings behind SM North, in Pag-asa Bliss. It was night. I was watching this cartoon movie on TV, The Last Unicorn. Halfway throgh the show, the power got cut.
This would soon be known as the Luzon blackout. It was caused by a battalion of jellyfish attacking the power station.
Most of my friends my age were watching the same cartoon show. We were young then, and the blackout took preceedence over the cartoon. We remember fragments of the movie, but never the whole story:
--a talking butterfly
--a unicorn, the last of its kind
--a mysterious woman. It is impossible to see yourself reflected in her eyes
--an evil king
--a great wizard
--crashing waves at the beach
--a red bull
