one of the very few reasons columbus, ohio is better than some other cities in the country is their municipalities. this can be conveyed through their timely and somewhat interesting response to the email i sent to COTA yesterday:
Would you please give more detailed information so an investigation can take place? I would like to know the direction the bus was traveling, time of day, a bus number if you were able to get one, any thing to help identify the driver of the bus.
to which i responded:
I do not know the bus number, but it was headed north around 10:20 AM. I would like to say, however, that I do not wish for this driver to be fired if that were the planned course of action. I just want him to realize that that intersection is particularly busy, as it is the main entrance to OSU and just two blocks from the heart of the university's most densely populated off-campus neighborhood. Thousands of people cross that intersection everyday and all of your drivers, not just this particular one, need to be especially careful there. EDIT 12:12 PM: i just realized that i said "particular" twice in that email and forgot to say that it was on high street. damnit again!
yeah, i know, i'm a pushover. it's a blessing and a curse. i just can't be mad after someone says they're sorry. and the thought of that guy getting fired... i mean, what if he has a wife and kids? if he had hit me, that'd be one thing. but he didn't. and i wouldn't want to make his kids' lives harder just because someone guy with his head up his ass thought their dad should get fired after seeing a total 5 seconds of his performace. for all i know this guy is the best driver they have, but fucked up once. everyone deserves a second chance, right? if this is was his second chance then by all means fire at will. but i don't know any of that.
and i understand the arguement of "well, you didn't get hit, but someone else in the future might. wouldn't you feel terrible if you had the power to prevent that?" the short answer is yes, absolutely, i'd never be able to forgive myself. but the long answer is that i don't know whether or not that would ever happen. and what if the guy they hire in his place is ten times worse than he is and hits someone anyway? i would have had the power to prevent that from happening by not letting this guy get fired. what if gettin reprimanded for poor driving causes this guy to become a safer driver and prevents other people from getting hit? what if this guy goes on to be a senator and make public transportation safer for everybody. all because one time he ran a red light and almost hit a guy on a bike.
maybe he doesn't remember the incident at all.
the point is, you can't predict the future. so i'd rather be a nice guy because what goes around comes around, and i'd like to think that i've got good things coming around.
