Rose slouched her her chair, arms folded over her chest and a sullen expression on her face. Not only were they making her go to school, they were making her go to a reading class. Reading! And it was "literature", too. She wasn't exactly sure what the difference between "books" and "literature" was, and she didn't really care to find out.

She didn't have a pen-- but there was a crayon in her pocket that she had borrowed on the train, and then forgotten to put back. Hoping that the teacher would be nice and ignore her if she was helpful, Rose held it out wordlessly. "Do you want a crayon?"

Miss Brooke noticed Rose and her offer of the crayon. It might not be proper to use it in this situation, but it was so sweet that the child was attempting to help her out. Smiling at her, she took it from her hand. "Thank you, this works just fine!"

She smiled back. "You're welcome." Maybe her idea really would work; she hadn't expected a teacher to actually use a crayon.

Looking over her seating chart, she noted the little girl's position in the class and read what her name was. "You're Rose Casson?"

"... Yes," she said, a little warily.

"For being such a good girl, Rose, I'll get you a treat!" She went over to her desk, opening the drawer to look through. For a while, she was busy looking for her candy tin, unsure of where she had tucked it away. "Where did I put that thing..?"

"What kind of treat?" she asked, feeling a little bit like a dog.

"Uh...I'm not sure of what I...had..." Her voice trailed off as she opened another drawer to look in.

She waits, then finally says, "It's okay."

"I'm sorry, Rose." Miss Brooke hung her head, ashamed at her abysmal organization skills. What kind of example was she setting for her students?

She looks a bit startled at that. Most teachers are bossy and commanding and never, ever apologize to their students, even when they do horrible things like steal your drawings from you to hang on the classroom wall. "... It's all right."

Her face lit up when she got an idea. "How about I give you..." Quickly, she scanned through her messy desk to pick out a nice item to give her. "...I'll give you this." Miss Brooke handed Rose a glittery eraser. It had been used once or twice previously, but was still in a near mint condition.

"Thank you!" Rose was actually pretty pleased about this development. She slipped the eraser into her pocket, hoping she would remember not to use it (it was to pretty to get all rubbed down and messy).

Laughing softly, she looked at her once more. "I promise, I'll get you a better gift next time. Continue being a good girl, okay, sweetheart?"

She shrugs slightly. "Okay."
