DRABBLES | Double Helices (The Blacks, PG) & An Odyssey (Remus/Sirius, PG)

(I use the word "drabble" loosely: no way I would have enough self-control to cut and tweak these to exactly one hundred words.)

"Double Helices" | The Blacks | PG

A/N This what happens when the reading of too much Black-centric fanfiction and studying for a Biology exam collide. Sirius reflects on marriage and family lines.

He imagines the taint hovering at the edges of the Black family tree, a fungus eating away at the bark, or a leaf mold infiltrating the greenery. The alleles dance, weaving in and out of the gene pool, intertwined and interconnected, sometimes too close -- and cousin twines around cousin (double helices) to create another classically handsome Black with mercurial eyes and that volatile spark that seems just a little too close the fires of the Underworld.

"An Odyssey" | Remus/Sirius | PG

A/N Remus, on Sirius' return after Azkaban. Many words, not much action. Again, a product of insanity due to homework -- studying The Odyssey in English class and somehow finding that it parallels R/S.

Remus wonders if perhaps Penelope felt like this upon Odysseus’ return, after wanting and hoping and waiting faithfully for her love -- this realization of he has changed, I love him still, but who is he? Sirius has spent what must have seemed a lifetime battling darkness and his demons, fallen from grace; now, blood stains his aristocratic hands, and meanwhile Remus has been busy not moving on with life for twelve long years.

Because, all rationalizations and pretenses aside, he has been waiting all these years for Sirius to return, defying reason and logic and the betrayed voice in his mind that said no, no, no, he killed James and Lily and Peter, no. Late at night, he allowed himself to hope, not hate, and in turn hated himself for his weakness (for apparently love really does believe in forever).

And now Fate has decided to give forever a second chance: Sirius is here, broken and out-of-place like a twisted echo from the past. Yet twelve years have not prepared Remus for what will happen now that his wish (never vocalized, hidden in shame) has been granted -- James and Lily are still dead, and perhaps the Sirius he knew long ago is, too.
