When her eyelids flutter open, she has to squint to be able to see. The sun is glaring at her, and instinctively her sight shifts. The sky is all she can see, but that doesn’t bother her at all. It relieves her instead, for she didn’t think she’d ever get to see the expanse of blue again. Tears start welling when she thinks of what was lost, who was lost, and for a moment she asks herself if all this pain and destruction was worth it. The thought disappears as soon as she sits up and her eyes fall on the boy - no, the man lying next to her, smiling groggily at her while trying to rise.
It’s going to be difficult to rebuild, she knows. But difficult isn’t new to her. Gazing at the blue sky once more, she decides - it’s definitely worth it.
