[ and Karkat is going to be bold enough to ask. ]

What the fuck is that gem?

[Well, well.]

Ah, and good evening to you, too! Straightforward as always, I see.

[...that aside.]

It's a bit of a rare commodity, where I come from. Rather sought-after and highly valuable, though I imagine it won't be nearly as useful here as it is there.

Don't tell me you're a fucking jewel hoarder, Kimblee.

Given that you've been straightforward with me in the past, I see no reason to not return the favor, as it occurs to me that I've told you relatively little - you've mentioned that those of your race are gifted in more ways than the average human. Accelerated healing, psionics and the like, correct?

Where I'm from, certain humans are capable of a bit...more than others. Transmuting one material into another, crafting weapons out of mundane items, manipulating the kinetic energy flows within things both living and nonliving, altering or destroying large parts of one's surroundings, things along those lines. It's a field of study, rather than an inherent gift; these stones are capable of enhancing those abilities.

What is this gift of yours called? To be honest, I've never heard of something quite like that.

Alchemy. Most here seem to be under the impression that its primary use is turning lead into gold for some reason, but that's far from the case.

How the fuck would you even begin to make something completely different than what you started with?

Well, one can't transmute something into an entirely different material; rather, you can only work with the materials you have. We can't create from nothing, nor can we destroy something entirely and render it into nothing - it all follows the law of Equivalent Exchange, which governs everything that exists.

However, a fair amount of interesting things can be done using the chemical makeup of various materials, if one is experienced enough in that field. Chemicals aren't my particular area of expertise, but I understand the theory well enough and know how to do a few tricks; for example, say that you - for some reason that I'm sure would be known to you and absolutely no one else - wanted to transmute a desk into water. Processed wood is primarily cellulose, which can be broken down into carbon, hydrogen and oxygen; it essentially breaks down into C1H2O. Someone who's skilled enough with chemical alchemy could theoretically separate out and release the carbon, leaving only the hydrogen and oxygen and effectively liquifying the desk ( ... )
