A Dark Future

(ORIGINALLY POSTED IN http://trust-and-blood.livejournal.com/)

With my fist clenched firmly around it, I place the phone back into its holder, hearing it click into place.  I take a deep breath in, making a feeble attempt to process in my mind the words I had just heard.  I close my eyes, trying to ground my thoughts.  I can't tell whether I'm in shock or if I'm just feeling some kind of reluctant acknowledgment of a truth I had known all along.

Nathan had been changing for a while now.  I guess I knew that all along but I had never expected a call like that, I never expected to hear my own brother say those words.  They were nothing more than a statement of betrayal.

I reopen my eyes, allowing them to focus through the dirty window and onto the street below.  I watch as the people below went about their normal lives, unaware of the great change that would soon take place.  Then again, it wouldn’t really affect them, not most of them anyway.  My mind is overpowered with visions of what Nathan could have meant by what he told me.  A coming change for those with abilities…a safer world?  What was he talking about?  Genocide?  Would everyone with an ability be rounded up?  Imprisoned?

He called it a warning…something he owed me because of our shared blood.  They will still come after me, and I know at some point I will have to run.  But not just me…all of us.  Nathan has to be stopped.  I have a feeling that many lives are at stake here and I won’t just stand by like he wants me to.

I don’t know where we will go from here but I know that in order to survive, we will need to come together.  They say there is strength in numbers…I guess only time will tell.

I stand up and slip on my jacket before making my way to the door.  I need to think of something to do about this.  Maybe a walk will help clear my mind.
