Title: See You At The Bitter End
Author:
explodeyy Pairing: Jack/Ianto
Rating: PG, there's only that f word.
Warning: None
Spoilers: Series 3, In The Shadows.
Summary: He had made a promise. A silent promise. He promised that he will see him again, sooner or later.
Author's Notes: It's that scene. Just keeps on playing and playing and playing. And I had to pass the time so I wrote this. I dunno, it just kind of came out. It's short because the scene is fast. They're escaping the hub. Ianto doesn't have time to reminisce about his whole entire life. Hmm, yeah.
Disclaimer: They are, sadly, not mine.
Every step we take that's synchronized
Every broken bone
Reminds me of the second time
That I followed you home
Jack gripped Ianto’s neck, his lips radiating desperation.
Ianto hated being maneuvered, being told where to go, what to do. But it’s all he’s been doing these past two years of being in Torchwood. They tell him to make the coffee, get these files from the archives, fuck me here, push that button there (“It’ll help with the pain, Ianto”), retcon that person, throw that body right there.
Be this person (“Oh yes, Mr. Ambassador for Wales?”), get out of here. Alive.
The only time he remembers making his own decision was with Lisa. He chose to save her, chose to keep her alive. He chose to hide her in Torchwood Three.
(He also chose to save Jack from hell. He chose to go to hell himself to save Jack and forgive him.)
Lisa was the one who told him what buttons to push, which ones make her feel better, stronger. Lisa was the one who made him promise. She knew he always keeps his promises.
Like that night he met Jack. He had made a promise. A silent promise. He promised that he will see him again, sooner or later.
Then that night at the warehouse. He promised Jack: There will be more. There has to be more. What more he wanted, he didn’t exactly know back then.
Now, as Jack assured him with the presence of his lips against his own, (Get out of here. I’ll be fine. Be fine. I’ll be fine. Please. Promise me you’ll be fine.) Ianto realized that he didn’t know exactly what he wanted. He still didn’t know what that more was. This thing with Jack didn’t even start until after Lisa.
Or maybe it hadn't.
Maybe it had started with that first promise. That silent promise. That silent promise he’s giving to Jack now. It comes from every fiber of his being to his lips. It tears through the desperation, the sadness. Ianto took Jack’s sigh as an indication that the message was received.
'I’ll see you again, sooner or later.'
You shower me with lullabies
As you're walking away
Reminds me that it's killing time
On this fateful day
See you at the bitter end.
