two handfuls of days:

ten days until christmas!

we have a family tradition of having a tree up by my brother's birthday (the sixth). this year ours was up in time by a hair and I think for once we have the most perfectly shaped tree. not too tall, not too short and well-proportioned in the body. i can't help it - it's not christmas without a tree. tinsel, lights, baubles, a star and each of marissa's decorations i have collected over the last few years. each time I walk into the house after the doors and windows have been closed all day, i exclaim "what is that smell!?" as it makes me feel happy. after five days of that, darren beat me to it on saturday by asking before i could.

my mum is far away, my older brother in a wintery canada, darren's older brother in a wintery england. presents for the young nieces and nephews (we only give gifts to those who can't drive these days) will be opened in living rooms which seem a world away from ours.

the twins and i will visit my half-sisters during the day and then return to the little blue house in the afternoon. the sky will likely be overcast and it will probably be humid. we're hosting the main meal at the little blue house with a free turkey darren won through a competition and a variety of desserts (another steadfast rule of christmas - as much trifle and pav with fresh fruit as you could hope to eat). there will be me and the twins, darren, his parents, younger brother and our cats.

merry seasonal celebrations to you all!
