Sai remembers many things. He supposes he recalls too many, after all, memories accumulate after a thousand years. He remembers all of the thousands of games he has played, as himself as well as with both Torajirou and Hikaru. He recalls the cold feeling of Go stones, the cold feeling of the water as he…
The problem with being a ghost was that not much distracted him from his memories. While Hikaru sleeps, he is left to think about many things, past, present and future, good and bad. Lately his thoughts had turned to wonder how long he had left with Hikaru. How many more games would he watch? How many more games would he be allowed to play? How much stronger would Hikaru be when he eventually disappeared?
Will you let me play? I only want to play Go forever, that’s the only thing I’ve ever wanted.
He notices the stars aren’t bright here in the city, losing the fight against the streetlamps to see which can shine the brightest. He can usually only make out one or two so he tries to recall the stars when he was alive, when they had nothing to compete with except the moon, and finds this is a memory that has faded, or perhaps was never made. The last time he saw the stars he paid them no heed and he adds this to his many regrets.
“Hikaru…” he whispers. “Do you remember what you said back in the first tournament? How you thought the goban was the universe and the stones were the stars? You could make your own universe, you thought. How many universes have we made together, Hikaru?”
He pauses, a catch in his throat, “How many more will we make, Hikaru?”
Hikaru sleeps on and does not answer.
