There is a house on a street you’ve walked every day for the last two years. The problem is you don’t think it’s been there the whole two years you’ve been walking past. In fact, you’re pretty certain it was an empty lot. But you decide that can’t be possible, that of course the house has been there the whole time.
But you’ve been wrong before. And you’ll be wrong again.
A week after you first notice it, you can no longer resist the temptation and you step into the front yard. Your feet carry you to the door where you hesitate. Your hand trembles over the doorknob and, just as you’ve decide to turn and walk away, the door opens.
Two girls, faces too solemn for hair of those colours, stand on the other side and you begin to feel uneasy as they survey you.
“I’m so sorry.” you manage to stutter, taking a hurried step back.
“You’re here to see the mistress.” they chime in unison. It’s not a question, though you’re sure it should be (you’re wrong). They each grab one of your arms and pull you in. You assess the house as you’re being pulled through and decide it’s quite beautiful, not quite classic but with its own charm. An intoxicating scent, of spices, flowers and tobacco, hangs heavy in the air.
The girls pull you into a room and there, lying lazily on the chaise longue, is who you assume is their mistress.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to intrude-” you start but she quickly interrupts you.
“Yes, you did.” She turns her head to face you and you decide there are no words to describe her. Skin so pale, it complements her hair of the blackest black. Eyes half-lidded, smile just as softly veiled. She gets up and walks towards you, long hair trailing the floor with her furisode which hangs intentionally loose over her curvy body. Standing before you, she tilts up your chin to look you in the eye.
Under her gaze, you cannot bring yourself to blink.
“You came here because it was inevitable.” she says.
“Inevitable?” you manage to whisper.
“There is no such thing as coincidence. There is only the inevitable.” she says before smiling at you. “And? What is your wish?”
“My wish?” You’re beginning to feel like a parrot and you’re sure she can see this. You feel like this woman knows everything about you, can see right through you to your very soul. “I-I don’t have a wish.” (you’re wrong again)
She raises an eyebrow delicately and you know she knows you’re lying.
“It is in our nature as humans to want or need things. But some need things more than others.”
‘And I’m one of them.’ you think miserably.
“You can enter my shop for one reason: that you need to.”
“Because it was inevitable?”
She smiles. “Yes.”
“I see.” you say slowly. “And you’ll grant me any wish I want?”
“For a price.” she says simply but you take no heed.
You can have anything. Anything.
All humans have wants and needs, but some humans are more selfish than others.
Unfortunately, you do not realise that you are one of them.
Unfortunately, you do not realise that, yes, you can have anything.
But only for a price.
