She hates shinigami, hates them with almost every fibre of her being (the rest of her is concentrated on antagonising Shinji). She knows how hypocritical this is; after all, she was one, once upon a time.
Many things in her life are now once upon a time. She’s kind of thankful for that.
She thinks some things should just stay in the past.
But that doesn’t mean there are some things she doesn’t miss.
“What happened, Hiyori?”
Hiyori, arms crossed, lips pulled into a pout, remained silent and her captain sighed.
“Hiyori,” Hikifune started but Hiyori cut her off.
“What’s it matter? Shinji’s an idiot, he had it comin’.”
“That’s Captain Hirako to you.” Hikifune said, trying for stern but ending up with sympathetic.
“Whatever.”
“Was it something he did? Something he said?”
Hiyori looked up at her, the captain she admired so much, and felt the words on the tip of her tongue. But saying them out loud would be admitting she was upset by what he said.
Why was Shinji such an idiot? she thought angrily before a little voice in her head asked in response, Why are you so bothered?
She was pulled out of her reverie by a soft hand on her head.
“Hiyori?”
“It doesn’t matter.” Hiyori repeated. She pushed her captain’s hand away and Hikifune could only watch her retreating back as she walked away.
“Orihime-chan was my first love.” Shinji says simply, a dazed look on his face.
“Shinji, you say that to all the cute girls! You’ve said it to me before, too.” Lisa rolls her eyes.
“Oh, so you say that to all the cute girls? That’s funny, I don’ ‘member you sayin’ that to me!”
“That’s ‘cause I didn’t, you git.” he replies snarkily.
Hiyori hasn’t forgotten, no matter how far in the past it is.
Her captain had said she wanted to see her but she didn’t expect to see him there, too.
“’The hell you doin’ here, Shinji?” she yelled as soon as she saw him.
“Just talkin’ to your captain. Wanted to discuss what happened before.” he shrugged carelessly and she glared at him.
“I ain’t ‘pologisin’, I don’t care what you say!”
“I didn’ ask for an apology, did I?” Shinji nodded towards Hikifune. “Later, Hikifune.”
Hiyori kept her eyes downcast until he had left the room. The moment the door slid shut behind him, she looked up at her captain sternly. “I won’t say sorry ‘cause I’m not!”
“Captain Hirako told me what happened, only because I asked him to.” Hiyori’s eyes narrowed but kept quiet. “Hiyori, he didn’t mean to hurt your feelings-”
“’S’if he did.” Hiyori scoffed. “I don’t wanna be considered cute by someone like him anyhow.”
Hikifune smiled, “Yes, I think that would be quite an insult, wouldn’t it? Poor Lisa, she must be feeling rather violated.” She paused before placing her hand gently on Hiyori’s head once again.
“I don’t want you to think anything on what he said, okay? You are the cutest lieutenant I could ask for.” She gave Hiyori an affectionate noogie and her smile widened as she heard Hiyori chuckle. “Hiyori, you are gorgeous. Even if you act brash and rude and have a mouth like a gutter sometimes, you are beautiful in your own way.”
And for the first time ever, Hiyori felt it.
Beautiful.
She thinks some things should just stay in the past. She’s definitely happy to leave Soul Society and the shinigami there.
But she misses the soft touch of Captain Hikifune’s hand in her hair and her assurances (‘Hiyori, you are beautiful,’), yearns for someone to say that to her now, even though she knows it won’t make an ounce of difference.
And while she plays with her Hollow mask, she imagines her old captain back in Soul Society somewhere, and wonders.
