n Defense of Typewriters...

I just read an article (ok, blog) about how some authors still use typewriters. It seems stupid and antiquated at first, but the real reason is that they don't want to be distracted. Easily available information can be a distraction that deters the creative process.

It's also a more intimate connection between the artist and the art form. Imagine if some demiurge were forming us out of some primordial clay. Would you want to formed by a creator with his full concentration and dedication? Or some dude who was molding you while chatting away with some buddies.

Writing is part prayer, part inner war with yourself. It doesn't need your full concentration. It demands it.
